Right To Challenge Anytime, Anywhere – いつでもどこでも挑戦権
Itsudoko (When And Where) – いつどこ
Imagine the Money In The Bank gimmick but with a few DDT twists added to it. Every year DDT will hold a match (or several) to hand out multiple prizes to the winners. The big prize is always a KO-D Openweight Title shot that can be cashed in at any time by whoever holds it. In other words the prize holder has the Right To Challenge Anytime, Anywhere. The match is traditionally a Royal Rumble combined with a Ladder Match where the mystery Right To Challenge prizes are hanging above the ring. The majority of the prizes are KO-D Title shots but there are often other surprises in store for those who take the risk to grab them. Once the match is over and the Right To Challenge prizes have been revealed they become active for a certain period of time, usually up to half a year. The Right To Challenge title shots can be cashed in at any event as long as the champion is in the venue at the time. The rules have been slightly altered from year to year but that is pretty much the gist of it.
Here are the twists. First is the prize holder must defend their title shot in every match they are booked for until they finally cash it in. Should the holder be directly beaten in a match then the title shot transfers over to the person who beat them. This includes dropping a fall in tag matches, getting eliminated by somebody else in Battle Royals and all of the other ways you can lose depending on the match stipulation (whether or not DQ’s count towards this has been inconsistent over the years). The rule applies not just to DDT but for every other company in Japan and even the world! For example wrestlers have previously lost their Right To Challenge prize from losing matches in Big Japan and Gatoh Move. There’s also been some unofficial activity that happened in WWE of all places but nobody likes to talk about that.
If that’s not enough, there are years when several Right To Challenge prizes are active all at the same time. It creates a flurry of transfers that gives the KO-D Champion some breathing room while the rest of the DDT roster scramble over themselves for a title shot they may never get otherwise. Wrestlers are allowed possess multiple Right To Challenge title shots at once. If they directly lose a match then they only have to give up one prize at a time. Champions themselves can win the title shot and hold onto them until the period to cash it in expires, then the title shot becomes invalid. Wrestlers are also permitted to transfer their title shot over to another person of their choosing as long as both parties agree to it.
Over the years the physical item representing the prize has changed. They have been presented as contracts, wrist guards, custom made gauntlets, a sword and even an NFT. Prizes other than championship matches have been on offer to such as DDT contracts, the right to book your own wrestling show, a date with a particular person or even a punishment of some sort (the last two are sometimes related).

2013

2012 is when Amon Tsurumi adds the rule where wrestlers have to defend their prize in every match they are in until they cash in the title shot. He made the rule so the prize holders will keep their guards up and continue to fight while other wrestlers could still get chances to win a title shot. It also makes DDT’s shows more exciting as a result. Custom made gold Gauntlets were also given to the prize holders to represent their title shot.

Right To Participate In The 1st Tokyo Joshi Pro Title Match
The gimmick was not only done with DDT. Tokyo Joshi Pro got in on the idea for a little while too. Near the end of 2015 TJPW were preparing for their first Korakuen Hall show that would take place in the new year. The main event was to be the crowning of their first champion. A spot in that match was given out as a prize to be defended until the event took place. Since the Korakuen show was scheduled for 4th January the prize was more of a send up of New Japan and their Tokyo Dome main event stipulation rather than Money In The Bank. TJPW didn’t have the budget to produce a fancy looking briefcase so the certificate for the spot in the match was kept inside a backpack instead.

Right To Challenge Anytime, Anywhere NFT
In 2022 DDT wanted the Right To Challenge prize to be represented with something never used before in pro wrestling. It was revealed to be an NFT that was created to prevent the title shot from being forged or stolen. The holder needed to set up their own account for the NFT to be claimed and stored.

Right To Challenge Anytime, Anywhere Shields
After taking a year off, the Right To Challenge Prizes returned this time as Shields. They could be used for shots at the KO-D Openweight Title, DDT Universal Title or the DDT Extreme Title. Also in a minor change the prize would only change hands if the holder was beaten on a DDT related show. If the Shields look familiar to you then I don’t know what link you’re trying to establish. It’s not like they just went and got a particular piece of video game merchandise, turned them upside down, painted each of them a different colour and slapped a logo in the centre…
