Pro wrestlers from across the Japanese scene all gathered together for the final ever show to take place inside Shinjuku FACE. For 21 years the venue in the heart of Kabukicho hosted hundreds if not thousands of pro wrestling and martial arts events but the time has come for it to close down. Not only has their rent controlled lease come to an end but the entire Humax Pavilion complex that FACE is a part of is said to be getting a heavy reconstruction/replacement job in the future. So today was Shinjuku FACE’s last day in business.
The main event was inspired by the headline match of FACE’s first ever event held 21 years ago. Back then it was a women’s MMA show but the main event was a pro wrestling match between Mayumi Ozaki & Dynamite Kansai against Aja Kong & Manami Toyota. Both Ozaki and Kong are still active so they got to relive the match, this time with Chihiro Hashimoto and Sareee also involved. OZ Academy always treated FACE as its home so it was only natural for Ozaki’s hechman Policeman to get involved and deal some heavy cheating in the match. Ozaki & Sareee kind of needed the extra help because even the three of them working together couldn’y overpower the combined strength of Kong & Hashimoto. Eventually the match broke down into a brawl that flowed outside the ring. The action was even starting to damage the venue itself and both teams wound up getting counted out to end the match in a draw.
Ozaki wasn’t happy with that result and demanded the match to restart. Not only that but she also called for every wrestler in the building to come out and wreck the place while the match continued! The entire venue turned into chaos with wrestlers hitting things with chairs, MAO driving the Dramatic Dream bike around ringside, The Brahman Brothers throwing water around everywhere, Syuri giving Sakura Hirota the Old School rope walk across the counter and Yuma Aoyagi posing for pictures with fans. Back in the ring Ozaki & Policeman were trapped in the corner so Kong led a Sayonara Train of wrestlers to charge into them one by one. The final person to join the train was the venue’s manager Yuka Ogawa. She got into the ring carrying a framed photo of the late Taichi Sakaiya, a politician who was involved with the creation of FACE. When Ozaki finally fell down to the canvas after taking the attacks, Kong & Hashimoto told Ogawa to pin her so she could score the final pinfall in Shinjuku FACE.
After the match the fans started a “One More Time” chant but Kong said there’s nothing they can do about it. She would love to keep wrestling here 100 more times but the entire building will disappear soon. She then ordered Minoru Suzuki to gather up his money and buy the plot of land so they can build a new FACE. Hashimoto said this is the place where she grew stronger. She never got to hit anyone with a chair or umbrella before today but she really enjoyed hitting Ozaki with them. Sareee said she’s never had a match as chaotic as this. Shinjuku FACE was where she first met her ultimate rival Hashimoto and she is certain the two will keep leading women’s pro wrestling. Ozaki and Kong interrupted her so they could talk about their own decades long rivalry that will keep on going until one of them goes away. They’ll even be around if a new Shinjuku FACE gets built so they can be on the first show there!
More people spoke about their history with FACE including Suzuki, Sanshiro Takagi, Kuroshio TOKYO Japan and Sakura Hirota. Suzuki revealed that Ogawa used to work in Pancrase. When she left the company he never knew where she went until he had a match here and saw that Ogawa was in charge of the place. Takagi loves FACE and knows it will live on in everyone’s hearts. Kuroshio admitted his promotion Up Town had the most shows that ran over time and paid those penalty fees the most. He also snuck in extra chairs behind the staff’s back because more people would show up than the ticket sales suggested. Hirota started crying because there is a hallway backstage that is the perfect size for the wrestlers to just hang out and chat with each other. Whenever she was here she knew her friends would be waiting for her there.
Ogawa was then invited to give her own speech. She’s come to realize how precious and important this venue is and is thankful to Taichi Sakaiya for his help in establishing Shinjuku FACE in the first place. She feels it is up to her to write the next chapter and she intends to create a new venue to carry on the FACE legacy.
There were some eventful Iron Man Heavymetalweight Title changes that happened throughout the show. The first happened when Ogawa was supposed to present a prize to the winner of the Battle Royal. Unfortunately the winner was one of The Brahman Brothers and they both wanted to attack Ogawa instead. Sanshiro Takagi got into the ring but that just meant The Brahmans threw their buckets of water at both of them. The splash was enough to knock Takagi out in the middle of the ring and the fans all encouraged Ogawa to pin him and win the Iron Man Title. Then at the end of the show Ogawa announced that the burden of holding this champion is too much to bear for her. She decided she would hand the belt over to Shinjuku FACE itself! Yukinori Matsui accepted her decision and declared the title change official. At the stroke of midnight, Shinjuku FACE was now officially closed for good so DDT decided the Iron Man Title has now become vacant.
