Kota Ibushi Signs With New Japan, Also With DDT

October 7, 2013

ibushi-njpw-ddt

The day many New Japan fans have been waiting for (and I have been somewhat dreading) has finally happened. Kota Ibushi has signed a contract with New Japan! He is now a full time member of the New Japan roster. However in what may be a first for Japanese wrestling, Ibushi will also continue to be under contract with DDT. So Ibushi will be wrestling for both companies. His NJPW contract lasts for one year, as it traditionally is for every New Japan wrestler while his DDT contract lasts for another three years.

It is interesting how this deal came about. New Japan chairman Naoki Sugabayashi has attempted to sign Ibushi in the past but could never convince him to jump ship. In fact he even admits that if this happened decades ago he would have paid a lot of money to steal him from DDT. Fortunately New Japan and DDT have a good relationship and Sugabayashi realises the potential Ibushi has if he wrestles for both promotions. Sugabayashi recently made an official offer to Sanshiro Takagi and even then Takagi had to convince Ibushi to take the deal! Ibushi says he loves DDT and does not want to leave the company but after a deal was made to wrestle for both he finally agreed. For now Ibushi will exclusively wrestle for New Japan and DDT but offers for appearances in other promotions could still be considered.

However, Ibushi did not get everything he wanted from the deal. His request to have Michael Nakazawa continue to be in his corner for the New Japan matches has been repeatedly turned down. Takagi even joked that he will force Ibushi to go out to the ring alone if he has to. But Sugabayashi did offer to send Captain New Japan over to DDT so he would become Captain DDT. Hey it could be worse. They could send over YOSHI-HASHI.

In DDT it will be business as usual for Ibushi and he will still be available for the crazy stuff like the Falls Count Anywhere matches that take place outdoors. He will not change his style for New Japan and wants to focus on the Junior Heavyweight division and win the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title from Prince Devitt. He also wants to face wrestlers he has never fought before. His schedule will increase because he will also appear on New Japan’s tours. Both New Japan and DDT will work together to avoid any double bookings if the companies are hosting events on the same day.

Ibushi’s first match as a New Japan wrestler will be at Sumo Hall on 14/10 for the “KING OF PRO-WRESTLING” iPPV. He teams with Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma to face Prince Devitt’s BULLET CLUB faction.

27. Toru Owashi (51 votes)
– Mitomi Masayuki (51 votes)
29. Shuji Ishikawa (45 votes)

Total Votes Cast: 5,728 votes

Danshoku Dino wins the DDT48 General Election and becomes the first two time winner of the competition, his previous victory being the very first election in 2010. This was the closest result yet with Dino winning by just 9 votes. As the winner, Dino receives a KO-D Openweight Title shot against HARASHIMA in Korakuen Hall and also a ¥1,000,000 cash prize, which funnily enough is exactly what he won four years ago.

The top 20 fills up the main card at the 20/10 Korakuen show while spots 21-24 will compete in a dark match. Shigehiro Irie and Daisuke Sasaki tied together in 20th place so they both qualify for the main card. This opened up a dark match spot for the person who finished 25th. That person is DJ Nira, who just beat out Yoshihiko by a single vote! On the other end of the single vote spectrum, Mio Shirai must be feeling a little salty by missing out of the main card by one vote.

Isami Kodaka was this year’s dark horse by finishing in second place and coming so close to Dino. He may wind up like Hikaru Sato and receive good fortune for his performance. Sato benefited from strong showings in the first two elections, winning the second one and eventually winning the KO-D Title because of it. Kodaka is in a similar spot as a long time member of the Union roster who recently became the face of the promotion.

Maybe the biggest surprise is Super Sasadango Machine finishing 9th. The Niigata wrestler has only wrestled twice in DDT this year. Maybe the fans really like sasa dango food. Or maybe he reminds them of Muscle Sakai. Who knows?

0. Dark Match: Guanchulo Vs Gorgeous Matsuno ended in a Time Limit Draw (5:00).
1. KO-D Tag Team Titles: Isami Kodaka & Yuko Miyamoto (c) defeated Keisuke Ishii & Soma Takao when Kodaka pinned Takao with a Cradle (12:14).
*V1 for Yankii Ni Cho Kenju.
2. Iron Man Heavymetalweight Title – Scramble Battle Royal: KUDO defeated Akihiro (c) with the Diving Double Knee Drop (9:54).
Order of Elimination: Masa Takanashi, Tomomitsu Matsunaga, Kazuki Hirata, Hoshitango, Cherry, Mio Shirai, Michael Nakazawa, DJ Nira, Akihiro.
*KUDO becomes the 975th champion.
3. MIKAMI & Tanomusaku Toba defeated Hikaru Sato & Akito when MIKAMI pinned Akito with a Modified School Boy (10:36).
4. KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Titles: Sanshiro Takagi, Toru Owashi & Akebono defeated Kota Ibushi, Kenny Omega & Gota Ihashi when Akebono pinned Ihashi with the Body Press (13:04).
*V1 for Sanshiro Takagi, Toru Owashi & Akebono.
5. Antonio Honda, Daisuke Sasaki & Yuji Hino defeated Danshoku Dino, Makoto Oishi & Super Sagadang Machine when Honda pinned Machine with the Diving Fist Drop (15:48).
6. Shigehiro Irie defeated Konosuke Takeshita with a Package Piledriver (10:50).
7. KO-D Openweight Title: HARASHIMA (c) defeated Yasu Urano with the Somato (21:18).
*V1 for HARASHIMA.

It was an emotional main event between two friends over the KO-D Openweight Title. But Yasu Urano was determined to do anything to win the title from HARASHIMA, even if it meant targeting the champ’s injured leg. However, HARASHIMA stayed strong and was able to defeat Urano to record the first defence of his latest title reign. Urano admitted feeling ashamed for going after HARASHIMA’s injury but he was forgiven. Next for HARASHIMA is the winner of the DDT48 General Election.

Shigehiro Irie has added the Package Piledriver to his arsenal. That move might come in handy when he and Keisuke Ishii travel over to All Japan in the coming weeks.

The KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Title being defended under Falls Count Anywhere rules guaranteed a crazy match. Sanshiro Takagi, Toru Owashi & Akebono were able to defeat the Golden Rendezvous in a match that went all over Korakuen Hall. Afterwards, Takagi asked Akebono if he could return on 4th November in Osaka Bodymaker Colosseum for the next title defence. Akebono said he would be there and he thanked the fans for their support. In a backstage interview Takagi bragged that his team is unbeatable. He also told Akebono they should go to a tiny place where a grand sumo champion has never fought before, like Chiba.

KUDO was absolutely dominant in the Iron Man Heavymetalweight Title Battle Royal. He even survived an ambush by Gorgeous Matsuno & Guanchulo after winning the title.

Yankii Ni Cho Kenju bragged about winning their first of 100 planned defences of the KO-D Tag Team Title. Keisuke Ishii took the defeat in his stride and swore he will bring the All Asia Tag Team Titles to DDT!

Grogeous Matsuno was impressed with Guanchulo after their time limit draw. He requested to team with him sometime in the future.

Saki Akai will return to wrestle her second ever match at the 4th November Osaka show.

Sanshiro Takagi announced that he wants DDT to perform at the Saitama Super Arena. He said it will be possible because they were able to do shows at Sumo Hall and Budokan Hall.

Union will soon become a separate company from DDT. The spin-off has been financed by DDT ever since its rebirth in 2005. It will now be its own independent company but will continue its relationship with DDT. Union will also debut a new rookie at the 23rd October Korakuen Hall show. The name I get from translation is Suru Kawamura but that will be corrected as soon as I get the proper name.

Tokyo Women’s Wrestling will hold its first official show in Kitizawa Town Hall on 1st December. It will be the second half of a doubleshot with DDT held that day.

7c. Kiss My Cock Match: Danshoku Dino defeated Kenny Omega & Antonio Honda (4:45).
7d. Sudden Death Kiss My Ass Match: Antonio Honda defeated Danshoku Dino & Kenny Omega when Honda pinned Dino with a Roll Up (3:11).
*Danshoku Dino fails in V2. Antonio Honda becomes the 23rd DDT Extreme Champion!

The 3 Way feud between Danshoku Dino, Kenny Omega and Antonio Honda came to its conclusion today with the DDT Extreme Title on the line. Dino made the rules for the contest and decided it would be held over three rounds so it would be clear that whoever wins overall deserves the championship. Round 1 was an Over The Top Rope match which was won by Omega. Round 2 was a Silent Match, whoever made a sound while wrestling was disqualified. Kenny messed up and was eliminated when he yelled “Stop!” at Honda before hitting him with an Enzuigiri. Honda then made Dino yell in pain when he crotched him on the top rope to win the round. Round 3 was a Kiss My Cock match where pins only counted when a wrestler had his crotch pressed against his opponent’s mouth. Naturally Dino won that round by pinning both Honda and Omega. After three rounds it was a three way tie. Dino immediately called for sudden death under Kiss My Ass rules. Dino’s choice of match backfired when Honda pinned him with a roll up, pressing his ass against Dino’s face. Honda’s victory speech included a weird metaphor about DDT growing larger means there is a decrease in nose fucking as a result.

New World Japan reunited for one night to take on the Monster Army. Sanshiro Takagi was in a furious mood because he had a train ticket for Yoshiaki Yago to send him home after the show but it went missing. He accused the Monster Army of stealing them but they denied it. The nWj trapped Daisuke Sasaki in the corner during the match and interrogated him while throwing chops to the body. Yukio Sakaguchi eventually made Sasaki submit and Takagi again demanded his ticket. Amon Tsurumi came out and said he had Takagi’s ticket. Takagi apologised and laughed it off acting like he had not just beaten up Sasaki. Yago was the last man in the ring and apologised to the fans for being away for so long. He explained he was busy selling used cars in Russia.

Both men have been taken off tomorrow’s show in Yokohama and will be examined to see if they will be fit for next week’s Korakuen Hall event. That show is supposed to be headlined by the KO-D Openweight Title match between HARASHIMA and Yasu Urano. HARASHIMA’s injury could put that match into doubt.

Yokkaichi Australia Memorial
249 – No Vacancy

1. Antonio Honda defeated Michael Nakazawa with the Diving Fist Drop (8:16).
2. Toru Owashi & MIKAMI defeated Tomomitsu Matsunaga & Koji Iwamoto when MIKAMI pinned Iwamoto with the 450 Splash (10:24).
3. DJ Nira defeated Daisuke Sasaki with a Cradle (7:52).
4. KUDO, Yasu Urano & Kengo Takai defeated Yukio Sakaguchi, Makoto Oishi & Akito when Urano pinned Oishi with the Tombstone Piledriver (13:37).
5. Keisuke Ishii & Soma Takao defeated Kota Ibushi & Masa Takanashi when Ishii pinned Takanashi with the Tiger Suplex (9:57).
6. Yokkaichi Specialty Falls Count Anywhere 5 Way Match: Kenny Omega defeated HARASHIMA, Shigehiro Irie, Hikaru Sato and Danshoku Dino when Omega pinned Dino with the One-Winged Angel (26:14).

The main event was pretty chaotic. So much so that HARASHIMA and Hikaru Sato never knew the match ended when Kenny Omega pinned Danshoku Dino. So they continued fighting, even interrupting Kenny’s victory promo where he said he loves Australia. When the show ended, DDT announced HARASHIMA injured his left leg and was pulled out of tomorrow’s show in Yokohama.

Keisuke Ishii has been building up momentum with his new Tiger Suplex finishing move for his clash against All Japan Pro Wrestling. Ishii will be at the 23/9 AJPW show in Nagoya. He also has the upcoming KO-D Tag Team Title match to look forward to in Korakuen Hall next week.

Wait, wait, wait. DJ Nira won a match? Wow!
