Contract Renewal Time, SWEET DREAMS! Card

January 28, 2011

This part of the year in puroresu always brings bout the annual contract signing period where the promotions renegotiate the contracts of their signed wrestlers. DDT is no different when it comes to keeping tabs on its talent. January 28th was the final day of negotiations and the results have since been announced.

The DDT wrestlers who have signed new contracts are:

MIKAMI, HARASHIMA, Kota Ibushi, Danshoku Dino, KUDO, Yasu Urano, Masa Takanashi, Michael Nakazawa, Tomomitsu Matsunaga, Keisuke Ishii, Hoshitango, Gota Ihashi, Takao Soma, Rion Mizuki, Kazuki Hirata, Posion Sawada JULIE, Gorgeous Matsuno and Dick Togo.

The Union wrestlers who have signed new contracts are:

Shuji Ishikawa, Isami Kodaka, Ken Ohka, Seiya Morohashi, Cherry, Hiro Tsumaki and Shinichiro Tominaga.

Four wrestlers have declined offers to extend their contracts. They are Tanomusaku Toba, Futoshi Miwa and Yukihiro Abe for DDT aswell as 726 for Union. It’s likely that Toba and Abe will still wrestle part-time for DDT. Those two are still scheduled to compete in the Right To Produce Battle Royal at “SWEET DREAMS!” on Sunday. Miwa rarely wrestles nowadays and 726 had a light schedule with Union anyway so no big losses there. Again it’s possible that they could make some future appearances here and there.

Yusuke Inokuma also did not sign a new contract but in this case it was because he needed to return home to find his driver’s license. He has until February to find his license and sign the new contract.

Three of the wrestlers who signed new contracts are currently out of action with injuries. Masa Takanashi is recovering from his knee injury and is aiming to return in the summer. Poison Sawada JULIE is nursing his right elbow back to full health. Gota Ihashi was last seen in March but hasn’t wrestled since because of ligament damage in both knees.

Dick Togo is sticking with DDT up to his announced retirement. Can he end his career as the KO-D Champion?

Also notice that Michael Nakazawa signed his contract on time this year. The last time he delayed his contract renewal it led to Danshoku Dino assaulting him in his house and his car exploding with him inside it when trying to escape. He finally made it to the arena covered in burn marks while carrying the remains of his contract, only to inadvertently distract Sanshiro Takagi and cause him to lose the DDT Extreme Title to Hoshitango.

The KO-D Openweight Title and its Interim version will be unified back into one championship. Depending on the result, either Dick Togo will get his first defence of the belt or Antonio Honda will be officially recognised as the 35th KO-D Champion.

Win or lose, Honda is still one of the KO-D Tag Team Champions. He and Daisuke Sasaki now know their next challengers for the belts, Togo’s GRANMA teammates, GENTARO and Yasu Urano. Their match will take place in Funabashi on 20th February.

*Kim Nun Pun fails in V1. Isamai Kodaka becomes the 15th DDT Extreme Champion.
4. Bread Eating Deathmatch: Tsuyoshi Kikuchi (2.5) defeated Ken Ohka (1.5).
5. Shinichiro Tominaga Debut Match: El Generico defeated Shinichiro Tominaga with the Brainbustaaaaahhhhh!!!!! (16:11).

7. Manabu Nakanishi defeated Shuji Ishikawa with the Hercules Cutter (13:40).

It’s a new year and a new spring of life for Union. 2011 looks to be very good for DDT’s sleazier step-brother as the brand plans to be lot more active in the next 12 months. Union ace, Shuji Ishikawa put up a strong effort to Manabu Nakanishi of New Japan, but the strongman’s “Muscle Orchestra” was just too loud for Shuji to overcome. Manabu did give Shuji plenty of praise after the match though.

The TKG48 was victorious over Union once again with Sanshiro Takagi & Munenori Sawa defeating Kengo Mashimo & Madoka. However, Yoshiaki Yago appeared after the match to join forces with Union. He has formed his own unit to battle with his arch enemy Takagi. For now the unit is called the Revolutionary Armed Forces and their first battle with TKG48 will be a 6-Man Tag at Shinjuku FACE on 3rd February.

El Generico made his first appearance for Union, mask and all. He defeated the debuting Shinichiro Tominaga with the always deadly Corner Brainbuster. Tominaga’s next opponent was confirmed to be Tigers Mask from Osaka Pro.

After six long months of recovery, Ken Ohka promised to eat lots of bread to grow strong. So he had a Bread Eating Deathmatch with Tsuyoshi Kikuchi with the winner being whoever ate most of the bread that was hanging above the ring. Kikuchi had a nice glass of milk to wash down all the bread he ate after he won.

Isami Kodaka won the DDT Extreme Championship in the Captain’s Fall Six Man Tag. Kim Nun Pun’s reign was cut short by Isami’s Diving Double Knee Drop. No word on any monster sightings while Survival Tobita was in the ring.

Two other matches were announced for February 3rd. Shuji Ishikawa and Tsuyoshi Kikuchi will pair off against each other while Ken Ohka will take on Canada’s “First Lady of Hardcore”, LuFisto!

Ryuji Ito was introduced as another member of the TKG48. So far, all of the members of TKG48 that we know of are Sanshiro Takagi, Shigehiro Irie, Munenori Sawa, Tsuyoshi Kikuchi, Ryuji Ito and DJ Nira.

Quite the hectic night for the Indy Wrestling scene as Big Japan, DDT, K-DOJO, Freedoms, Ice Ribbon and a Hell of a lot of other promotions (including Pro Wrestling NOAH!) joined together to bring in 2011 with style, energy and craziness.

Turns out puroresu’s version of The Ultimate Showdown Of Ultimate Destiny was won by WWE. FUNAKI was the final wrestler to enter the match with the only man left in the ring being DDT’s own Danshoku Dino. Naturally, Dino set his sights, his hands and his lips on Smackdown’s No. 1 Announcer. He was able to get a deep kiss on FUNAKI but just like Beth Phoenix and The Great Khali at the 2010 Royal Rumble, FUNAKI used the kiss to pull Dino over the ropes and both men fell out of the ring. Dino’s feet hit the ground first and FUNAKI was declared the winner after a brief moment of confusion.

Dino was the ironman of the match, entering in at Number 1 althouh he spent a lot of the match being intimate with Shinobu. Dino made it to the point where the last four wrestlers in the ring were himself, the Brahman Brothers and Ice Ribbon’s littlest joshi, Chii TomiyaBrahman Shu & Brahman Kei bullied Chii with the severed head of Toru Owashi (it was really just a decapitated pig’s head, a real one a that). Dino came to rescue Chii, only to give the poor girl the Danshoku Driver and eliminate her from the match. For shame, Dino.

The Battle Royal even had a title change. Hikaru Sato brought out the World Sato Championship belt with him to the ring. When JWP ace Kaori Yoneyama eliminated Sato from the match, a title change was declared and Yoneyama was handed the newly renamed World Yoneyama Championship belt for the achievement.

Kikutaro recorded both in ring and behind the scenes footage on his cellphone and uploaded it to his Ustream page, which you can find the link to below. The 19 O’Clock Pro-Wrestling dark match was also streamed live on the web and was shown on their own Ustream page.

*V2 for Golden Lovers.
7. Interim KO-D Openweight Title: Antonio Honda defeated GENTARO with the Octopus Hold (25:10).
*Honda becomes the 1st Interim KO-D Openweight Champion.

A packed Korakuen Hall crowd came to see the final DDT event for 2010 where Antonio Honda became the man to lead DDT into the new year. With Dick Togo out of action the original “Mentor Vs Student” main event of Togo Vs Honda was called off and the KO-D Openweight Title was declared inactive until Togo’s return. The replacement main event became Honda Vs GENTARO for an Interim KO-D Championship. A full house watched for 25 minutes as the two men gave their all but in the end it was Honda who clasped GENTARO in the Octopus Hold, forcing the veteran freelancer to submit. Afterwards Honda admitted to having mixed feelings towards winning the match, most likely because he couldn’t face Togo, but he got grand ovation from the packed Hall as he was presented the Interim Title.

The Golden Lovers had a slight disadvantage going into their IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Titles defence against Jado & Gedo. A few days ago in New Japan, Kota Ibushi was in a main event that stood as a preview to the upcoming Tokyo Dome spectacle. Despite coming out on the winning team, Ibushi was left with a minor injury to his left knee. Jado & Gedo targeted Ibushi’s left knee and used dirty tactics such as removing turnbuckle pads to take advantage of the match. However, Kenny Omega was there for his BFF and turned the tables in their favour, focusing their attacks on Gedo and finally pinning him with the Croyt’s Wrath.

The Danshoku Dino Vs Makoto Oishi match was, well…weird. Backstage, KUDO approached Tsurumi Amon asking to replace Yukinori Matsui as the referee for the match. Oishi stepped in and said he had no problem with KUDO’s offer. While the match went on, Matsui was seen backstage making his way to ringside, unaware that the match was taking place without him. Amon tried to stop Matsui from walking out by putting him in a Headlock. When that failed, he took out a bottle of laxatives and physically forced Matsui to drink it. Back in the ring Dino and Oishi were having their back and forth battle, leading to both men knoced out on the canvas. Backstage Matsui recovered from his sudden dose and got revenge on the DDT General Manager, forcing him to drink the laxative. With Amon out of the way, Matsui made his way to ringside. On the way he bumped into (and knocked out) Michael Nakazawa. He then walked past a dressing room with a sign saying it was being used by bikini idol and part-time wrestler Aika Ando. Tempted to sneak a peak, Matsui opened the door only to see Emi Sakura from Ice Ribbon getting changed. Feeling nauseous at the sight of Sakura half naked, Matsui walked away and then found two chihuahuas at the end of the hallway. Back in the ring, Dino had Oishi right where he wanted him and began dry humping the poor guy. KUDO’s reaction to this? He brought out a blanket and placed it over Dino and Oishi. Matsui finally came to ringside, carrying one of the chihuahuas he found. When he saw what was going on in the ring he called for the match to end. KUDO tried to stop him with a Buzzsaw Kick but Matsui dodged it and struck KUDO with a Rocket Punch. He finally ended the match in a No Contest. Oishi wasn’t happy with the result, mainly because he wasn’t sure if it meant he had to join Dino’s version of MEN’s Club. Tsurumi Amon came out to try and solve the problem when KUDO bravely stepped forward and offered himself to take Oishi’s spot in Dino’s group. Then Matsui offered to take the spot. Then the chihuahua Matsui was holding lifted its paw, asking for the spot. Then the room darkened and a spotlight shone on Masa Takanashi in the audience, and he dramatically offered to take Oishi’s place. Then Ken Ohka showed up to take the spot. Soon the entire audience had their hands raised. Makoto Oishi was so touched at what he just seen that he too raised his hand and asked to take the spot. Everyone in the ring looked at Oiishi and they all said in unison, “By all means!” Oishi wasn’t very happy at being duped afterwards.

Takao Soma has really taken to being the new leader of the Shit Heart ♥ Foundation and it showed in his match with Daisuke Sasaki. Due to recent tensions between the two, the loser of the match would be forced to eat dog food. Soma attacked Sasaki from behind while he was making his entrance and proceeded to fight dirty to get the advantage. The rest of the SHF were at ringside and Hikaru Sato was visibly angry at Soma’s actions. Sasaki fought back and even had to fight off Michael Nakazawa and Tomimitsu Matsunaga, but in the end Soma broke a plastic box over Sasaki’s head and then knocked out the referee with a chair shot. Soma dropped Sasaki with a Schwein and then hit the Diving Guillotine Drop for the pin. Nakazawa grabbed the unconcious ref’s hand and made him count to three to end the match. After the match Sasaki followed the stipulation and ate the dog food. Hikaru Sato had enough and said things had gone too far. After some trash talk with his stablemates, Sato said he would eat the dog food himself. However, he instead threw the dog food at Nakazawa’s face and ditched the Shit Heart ♥ Foundation.

Disaster-BOX made their farewell by winning the UWA World Trios Championship from the Shit Heart ♥ Foundation. Toru Owashi is taking a leave of absence from DDT but at least he has a title under his belt when he comes back. HARASHIMA thanked Owashi for the time they spent together as a team. Yukihiro Abe promised Owashi that he will become the KO-D Openweight Champion by the time Owashi returns. Owashi told Abe that if it does happens, he should get a title shot. He finished by saying DDT will always be his home and he will come back some day.

6. KO-D Openweight Title: Dick Togo defeated Hikaru Sato (c) with the Diving Senton (27:55).
*Sato fails in V1. Togo becomes the 34th KO-D Openweight Champion.

Despite planning to retire in six months time, Dick Togo showed he still has it in him to win a big championship. This is Togo’s third reign as KO-D Openweight Champion while Hikaru Sato becomes the seventh wrestler to lose the title without a successful defence. The other six are Masao Orihara, NOSAWA, Super Uchu Power, Sanshiro Takagi, GENTARO and Shoichi Ichimiya.

Antonio Honda will be Togo’s first challenger. Right after winning the title, Togo said he will take on anyone in DDT at anytime. Honda sprinted into the ring so he could make the first challenge before anyone else. He broke down into tears as he told everyone how he thought Togo was one of the best wrestlers in history. Togo said he was glad that his first defence will be against Honda and they hugged. Their match will take place on 26th December in Korakuen Hall.

Takao Soma reached a milestone in his career by winning the Young Drama Cup, beating last year’s winner Keisuke Ishii. The young man’s career has gone off to a very good start going back to winning his debut match at the first Ryogoku Peter Pan show in 2009.

Sanshiro Takagi is now officialy affiliated with Union. At this time he is still scheduled to be on a few DDT shows but that could very well change in the coming weeks. He praised Shigehiro Irie for his performance in the match despite taking the fall. Takagi nominated Irie to be his partner for his match against Shuji Ishikawa & Seiya Morohashi at the Union event on 3rd December. At the end of the show, Dick Togo and Tsurumi Amon presented flowers to Sanshiro Takagi as he said his farewell to the DDT brand. Takagi congratulated Togo on winning the belt and they shook hands, only for Togo to kick Takagi in the gut and give him a Pedigree. Togo posed with his belt and then left the ring. When Takagi recovered he gave said his goodbyes to the fans and led them with one last play of “Fire!” by Scooter.

Match 3 had wrestlers entering the match Royal Rumble style. It started off with Toru Owashi and DJ Nira against each other. Everyone else involved in the match came out dressed as Owashi, mimicking his entrance and body language while “Sandstorm” by Darude was blasting from the speakers each and every time.

Choun Shiryu announced that New Beijing will return to Japan for a show to be held on 11th February 2011. Tsurumi Amon was confused as the New Beijing brand allegedly broke up back at Muscle House 10. Choun explained that in China it is common for dynasties that die in the Autumn to revive in the Spring.

Cherry appeared on screen to announce the new name for the former Mitsuboshi Curry restaurant. The new name for the restaurant is now Nico Nico Curry and it will re-open on 12th December. The new logo conatins a large happy face that covered Cherry’s own face during the video, kind of like the Laughing Man logo from Ghost In The Shell.

New Year’s Eve Indy Celebration Card

November 21, 2010

DDT will be part of the big indy wrestling get together at Korakuen Hall for New Year’s Eve. Last year’s event was remembered for the 108-Man Battle Royal that begun in 2009 and ended in 2010 plus matches presented by each promotion involved. This time around there will be an inter-promotional, inter-gender one night tournament featuring Sanshiro TakagiTAKA Michinoku (K-Dojo), Great Kojika (Big Japan), Takashi Sasaki (Freedoms), Yuki Ishikawa (BattlArts), Guts Ishijima (GUTS World), Command Bolshoi (JWP) and Kana (Triple Tails). Every match in the tournament will have a three minute time limit so every contender will have to be on their toes from the second the bell rings.

The main event will be another large Battle Royal, this time a 30 Organisation Battle Royal. I guess this means there are only 30 participants involved with one wrestler representing each promotion, but you never know with this bunch running the show. Now would be a good time to brush up your knowledge on the Japanese indy scene over at the Puroresu Central website.
