Kota Umeda tore his right ACL and also injured his right femur during Sunday’s show in Hanamatsu. Surgery is required so Umeda will unfortunately be out of action for a while. That means he has to miss both the DNA Grand Prix and the Dramatic General Election. Umeda said he currently feels miserable because his immediate goal was to beat Kazusada Higuchi and win the Grand Prix. Also with KUDO just after returning from injury, Umeda was looking forward to Shuten-dōji rampaging through DDT as a four man group. He promises to begin his rampage when he returns.

Another month another tournament for BASARA. This time FUMA came up with an idea to do a tag team league to prove IRON PRIEST’s dominance. But in order to fit in the schedule the tournament will be a playoff instead. It is called the IRON FIST TAG TOURNAMENT in tribute to the Motorhead song and FUMA keeps calling it a Rock Festival instead of a Tag Tournament. Joining the tournament are teams representing BASARA’s units, Sportiva Entertainment and ZERO1. FUMA decided only he and Yusuke Kubo will be there flying the IRON PRIEST flag. He thinks they won’t need Madoka to help them. Trans-Am ★ Hiroshi & SAGAT are back together. Hiroshi is confident in his own abilities but worries the burden is too much for SAGAT to bear. Surprisingly Gouma Ryu was able to convince Masamune to team with him. Apparently Masamune would have teamed with Isami Kodaka but Kodaka picked Takumi Tsukamoto instead.

Yoshihiko Reappears, The Emperor Settles In, Higuchi Gets Prepared

From 15th to 18th September DDT and Tokyo Joshi Pro will be providing wrestling matches at the annual Tokyo Game Show in Makuhari Messe, Chiba. Each day will have two sessions taking place containing two or three matches. The Ring☆Dream online game will be collaborating with DDT on the 15/9 event, which will have five matches. The matches might find their way to Youtube but I don’t know if DDT’s channel will have them or another channel will.

Earlier this morning DDT posted an apology on their website over comments Super Sasadango Machine made for an online interview as well as on Twitter. During the interview Sasadango gave controversial opinions about the spending habits of female wrestling fans. Sasadango was critical of “pu-joshi” and claimed they do not spend as much as men. Therefore he believes DDT is better off catering to the 30-40 age group of their male fanbase because that group is filled with longtime wrestling fans. The line that caught the most attention went along the lines of “Women spend with coins, men spend with bills.”

Sasadango’s comments were heavily criticised since DDT has a big female fanbase. Even Danshoku Dino was among the critics. Sanshiro Takagi made the mistake of retweeting links to the interview without knowing what Sasadango said. In response to the controversy Sasadango will be taking a guaranteed 50% pay cut for all of his matches taking place in September. Takagi also takes responsibility for retweeting the article so he will take a 20% cut for the month. Sasadango has since apologised for his comments and has resigned from his role as the manager for NωA. Finally, he has been demoted to the dark match on this Saturday’s Shinjuku FACE show.

My thoughts on this? I’m very surprised by Sasadango’s line of thinking given his business savvy reputation. DDT has a lot female fans and it was stupid of him to disparage them like that. Believe me, without that demographic your Kota Ibushi’s, Kenny Omega’s and HARASHIMA’s would not have gotten as far as they have. Focusing on a middle-aged demographic is also a worrying idea because that trend becomes more and more niche as time goes by. A smaller audience that spends more to make up for the losses might be fine in the short term but that can’t be sustained in the long term. The comments were especially poorly timed because they come during the DDT Dramatic General Election, a month long contest that encourages fans to buy merchandise at DDT shows. I’m happy to see some action was taken on this.

Dino nominated Ishii as his first DDT Extreme Title challenger because of the funk he’s been in since Team Drift split up. Dino thinks this match will help Ishii out somehow.

Although Hirata was never a member of Team Drift, Takao considers him a friend and thinks a match with him for the title would be emotional. Takao is hoping to defend the title in both DDT and All Japan.

Endo says he has nothing but gratitude for Sasaki ever since he was invited to join DAMNATION. Sasaki is continuing to call the rest of the DDT roster “B Grade Garbage Wrestlers”. However he admires Yuko Miyamoto.

LiLiCo has a bunch of suiters looking for her hand in marriage so they can become famous. Dino came up with the bright idea to have a winner takes all match between the potential grooms. In a twist, Suguru Miyatake convinced Amon Tsurumi to add Dino to the match to wrestle on his behalf. Miyatake is not fit to go back to the ring but is desperate to become famous… I mean marry LiLiCo because he loves her or whatever.

DDT Dramatic General Election 2016

As soon as “RYOGOKU PETER PAN 2016” is over and done with DDT will move onto the annual DDT Dramatic General Election. This is the 7th year the competition is happening in some form, originally called the DDT48 General Election when it first took place in 2010. 41 wrestlers from DDT plus a few guests will spend all of September campaigning for votes from fans to earn a spot on the 23rd October Korakuen Hall show. Everyone who finished in the Top 20 will qualify for the main show while those who finish between #21 to #24 will be put in the dark match. The prize for 2nd Place is 300,000 yen plus a KO-D Openweight Title shot on the October show. The grand prize for the election winner is 1,000,000 yen and a main event KO-D Title match at Osaka Edion Arena #1 in December. If the KO-D Champion finishes in either first or second place then he will get to choose his challenger for that title match.

This year the field is only open to the DDT, DNA and BOYZ brands. Last year’s winner Isami Kodaka and his BASARA brand have declined to participate this year. Although they are part of the DDT Family, they now treat DDT as rivals and want to distance themselves to focus on their own projects. Tokyo Joshi Pro is also not involved but no reason has been given for their exclusion. Sadly the limited field also means Hiroshi Tanahashi is not following up on his promise last year to enter the competition. Don’t know if a deal fell through or if it was just a joke I took seriously.
