The annual New Year’s Eve Shuffle Tag Tournament switched over to a trios format for the end of 2021. Each team consisted of a DDT wrestler, a Big Japan wrestler and a “Dream Slot” wrestler from another company or batch of freelancers.

Shuffle 6-Man Tag Tournament – Round 1

I’ll Do It!! Vs Three Brothers Kawaii

Fans didn’t have to wait long for the reveal of Chris Brookes & Takuya Nomura’s mystery partner. It was Minoru Fujita! Their combined cuteness went to a 10 minute stalemate against the rugged trio of Kazusada Higuchi, Ryuji Ito & Shiro Koshinaka. In the final seconds Fujita hit Ito with the SAYONARA but time ran out before the pin. Sudden death overtime meant One Count Fall rules to win. Koshinaka misfired the Hip Attack and hit Ito by accident, allowing Fujita to get the 1 Count to win.

Ikemen’s Vs LEFTOVERS

Next up the team of Soma Takao, Yuya Aoki & Shuji Ishikawa all walked out dressed and posing like Masahiro Chono. They continued the Chono tribute by locking in a Triple STF to HARASHIMA, Daichi Hashimoto & Kengo Mashimo. They got a taste of their own medicine at the end when Hashimoto locked Aoki into his own version of the STF to win. He then encouraged his own team to do Chono’s pose.

Deadlifters Vs I Dream Of Twins, Lizards And Naomi

Things got weirder because next up was The Brahman Brothers entering the ring with Naomi Yoshimura & Kota Sekifuda behind them carrying stuffed toy lizards. Konosuke Takeshita and Yuji Okabayashi brought out chairs looking ready for a fight until they had powder thrown in their faces. Kuishinbo Kamen tried to help but couldn’t do much. Takeshita was given a Low Blow but found a way in his doubled over state to block a Sunset Flip and press down to get the three count.

Ugo Association Vs Team Saiyuki

Before this match began Shigehiro Irie and MAO shook hands to show that their problems are in the past and they can work together. Jun Kasai announced he created a new move and it is punching MAO a lot. MAO took a beating from Akito, Daisuke Sekimoto & Kasai but toughed it out so Yasufumi Nakanoue & Irie could come for the rescue. Akito then got singled out and fell to the trademark moves of his opponents.

Non-Tournament 8-Man Tag Match

The buffer match after Round 1 brought together a mixture of wrestlers from across the indies. DDT & Big Japan were represented by their young generation of Takuho Kato, Kosuke Sato, Hideki Okatani & Yuki Ishida. Their opponents were MUSASHI from Michinoku Pro, Daisuke Kanehira from HEAT-UP, Takafumi from ZERO1 & Tatsuya Hanami from 2AW. In the end MUSASHI picked up the win by making Ishida submit.

Shuffle 6-Man Tag Tournament – Semi Final

Three Brothers Kawaii Vs LEFTOVERS

The semi-finals had a tense start when Hashimoto and HARASHIMA declined to shake the other team’s hands. Fujita and Mashimo had a back and forth that ended with Fujita asking for a handshake only to get attacked. HARAHSIMA and Nomura got into a spirited kick-off and Fujita almost pinned Mashimo with the SAYONARA. The tables were turned when Fujita was hit with a Triple Super Kick and Mashimo pinned him with the Vertical Drop Brainbuster.

Deadlifters Vs Ugo Association

Kamen was targeted as the weak link in this match. While Takeshita & Okabayashi cancelled out Nakanoue & Irie the dying moments of the match fell down to Kamen and MAO. Kamen was caught in the Clothespin submission but held out for the last 30 seconds so the match could end in a draw. When Sudden Death began Kamen was quickly given more big blows but when MAO attempted La Magistral Cradle, Kamen blocked it and stole the win with the 1 Count fall.

3 Way Tag Match

The other non-tournament match brought the show back to weird territory. Danshoku Dieno jumped into the Hell Gate position, Kazuki Hirata started dancing, Kankuro Hoshino vanished to be replaced by Kenshiro Hoshino, then Abdullah Kobayashi disappeared and Stan Kobayashi took his place. To cap it all off, Jaki Numazawa left and returned as RoboCop! Antonio Honda was ready to finish the match but tripped and injured his knee. Kobayashi ended up using Dieno’s backside to charge up his Lariat arm and pin Honda with the Bakachinga Elbow.

Shuffle 6-Man Tag Tournament – Final

LEFTOVERS Vs Deadlifters

Poor old Kuishinbo Kamen has never won a tournament in his career. His run of luck in these things is so bad that back in Osaka Pro it was a known flaw that he would get eliminated early in their annual tournaments. By making it to the final, today could have finally been his day. Sadly it just wasn’t to be. He brought out some fun antics at the beginning but was there to win with his partners as the match heated up. Okabayashi floored HARASHIMA with a Lariat and Takeshita wiped out Hashimoto & Mashimo with a Topé. But HARASHIMA regained control of the match against Kamen and pinned him with the Somato to win the final.

The tournament winners celebrated and HARASHIMA said he felt good fortunes with his team this year. They were all the last people picked in the lottery draft which is why they called themselves LEFTOVERS in the first place. Hashimoto agreed and thinks it is a sign that the new year will be good to them. He’d like LEFTOVERS to team together for next year’s Shuffle Tag show but doesn’t know if that will happen. Mashimo credited all of the wrestlers involved for making today and exciting tournament and he invited all of them out for a group photo to end the show.

A draw was held to determine the eight teams competing in the trios tournament. Each trio also came up with team names for themselves. The most notable team is Konosuke Takeshita, Yuji Okabayashi & Kuishinbo Kamen. They are calling themselves Deadlifters because they claim that is what they all have in common. Takeshita can deadlift 250kg, Okabayashi can lift 300kg and Kamen they guess can probably lift 50kg. Also Takeshita and Okabayashi are currently neck and neck fighting for a spot in the D-Ou Grand Prix final. Kamen is counting on his partners to win the matches without him getting involved.

There are some powerful teams put together. Maybe the strongest was formed entirely out of luck. HARASHIMA, Daichi Hashimoto & Kengo Mashimo were all the last ones left in their pools so they came up with LEFTOVERS as their team name. Mashimo is happy with who he ended up with so he doesn’t care about being picked last.

Akito feels indebted to Daisuke Sekimoto & Jun Kasai because early in his career he worked with Big Japan (he was trained by BJW wrestler Hakaru Imai) and they were his seniors.

The annual NTV new year’s comedy show has been cancelled so Shuji Ishikawa now has time to concentrate on the tournament. Soma Takao is looking forward to teaming with him again. Yuya Aoki thinks all three of them have nothing in common. He believes they can have something in common by becoming tournament winners together.

One team is a reunion of sorts. Naomi Yoshimura and Brahman Kei were on the same team for the 2019 tournament but Brahman Shu was absent with the flu. Now the three of them are together with Kota Sekifuda as the missing piece of the puzzle. They used the song “I Dream Of Naomi” for their entrance in 2019 and Kei wants to reference that again. That is why their team is called I Dream Of Twins, Lizards And Naomi.

Chris Brookes and Takuya Nomura were opponents at the tournament two years ago. There is no heat between them, instead they both think they are cute. The third member of their team is the mystery wrestler and they are sure that wrestler is cute too. Therefore they are Three Brothers Kawaii!

Having the legendary Shiro Koshinaka on their team will encourage Kazusada Higuchi & Ryuji Ito to Hip Attack their way to victory. Higuchi is honoured to team with the two veterans. Ito thinks the team has other specialties but they should win the tournament with the Hip Attack.

There is another team with nothing in common and even worse, none of the members can find anything positive about that. MAO and Shigehiro Irie never got along. MAO describes their relationship as a Cold War that Yasufumi Nakanoue is now in the middle in as a neutral party. He hopes nothing gets bad enough for Nakanoue to press the nuclear button. All Nakanoue can promise is that the team will make things work.

There will be two non-tournament matches also happening on the show.

Ryota Nakatsu is now a two time Union MAX Champion after beating Takumi Tsukamoto. There was a High Kick in the match that Tsukamoto said blew away all of the memories he had since waking up this morning. The result gives the former champion mixed emotions. He is both extremely disappointed he lost and extremely happy to see Nakatsu as the champion again. He told Nakatsu to make good use of the MAX Title because he will win it back some day. Nakatsu wants to beat Tsukamoto’s reign of six defences so will aim to make seven. SAGAT came out and asked to be the first challenger. It will be Sparky Vs Sparky for the MAX Title!

Speed Of Sounds reclaims the IRON FIST Tag Titles from Astronauts! Teamwork was the key to this result. Tsutomu Oosugi praised his partner Banana Senga for being there at the right time, every time. He said if you ever want to win tag team championships, you have to have Senga as your tag partner. Over on the Astronauts side, Fuminori Abe & Takuya Nomura agreed that they lost because they wrestled more like two individuals instead of a team. However, Abe thinks Astronauts are still one of the top tag teams around. It’s up to them to start from the beginning again and improve each other as a team.

The UWA World 6-Man Tag Team Titles now belong to Toru Owashi, Shuji Kondo & Takuya Sugawara. It’s Aagan Iisou reunited! Owashi said the belts mean a lot to them because they were used by Toryumon and El Dorado when they were there. Aagan Iisou now claim management rights over the championship and where it will go next is up to them. Sugawara wrestled in BASARA for the first time and likes what he sees. He’s sure he will show up here again periodically. Owashi also praised Daiki Shimomura for how he has grown in BASARA. Isami Kodaka shares similar thoughts, feeling regret for Shimomura losing his title belt. He and Yuko Miyamoto were also happy to find out Minoru Fujita was in the venue to watch today’s show.

Yasu Urano carried the Fujita Pro Wrestling School flag to the ring for his entrance. Trans-Am ★ Hiroshi moved around weirdly on his feet during the match and blamed it on gout. He later turned the match into a singing contest against Gouma.

The shaky mystery of who is behind the Lil Kraken mask is cracking even further. His tag partner Takato Nakano accidentally shouted out “Tetsuo!” when he reached out for a tag during the match.

2. Jacket Double Bout: Trans-Am ★ Hiroshi & Gouma defeated Yusuke Kubo & Daichi Kazato by Referee Stoppage when Hiroshi used the Infinite STO on Kazato (R4 1:58).
3. Masato Kamino defeated Daiki Shimomura with the Lariat (13:15).
4. Fuminori Abe, Takuya Nomura & Yasu Urano defeated Isami Kodaka, Tsutomu Oosugi & Banana Senga when Abe submitted Oosugi with the Manjigatame (11:49).
5. Union MAX Next Challenger Decision League – Final: Ryota Nakatsu defeated FUMA with the V Slider (21:02).

Ryota Nakatsu wins the Decision League and will face Takumi Tsukamoto for the Union MAX Title at Korakuen Hall on 24th October! Nakatsu praised FUMA and admitted he could have lost to him today. Nakatsu called out Tsukamoto and called him really strong. Tsukamoto returned the compliment but told him he isn’t going to win the MAX Title from him. Nakatsu told the fans he and Tsukamoto are both 30 years old and they are going to have a passionate fight at Korakuen.

The 6-Man Tag Match was built around two things. The first was the amount of champions involved in the match. Isami Kodaka, Fuminori Abe and Takuya Nomura all entered carrying belts from several different promotions. The second was Astronauts and Speed Of Sounds facing off to see who is stronger. Abe made Tsutomu Oosugi submit to win the match but asked SOS if they could fight them again on 24th October for the IRON FIST Tag Titles. SOS accepted and Banana Senga said they will show Astronauts the true essence of tag team wrestling.

Toru Owashi attacked Isami Kodaka and Daiki Shimomura after Match #3. He almost Choke Slammed Shimomura onto a pile of chairs but was stopped and kicked out of the venue. As Owashi was leaving he told the Sento Minzoku wrestlers to polish the UWA 6-Man Tag Team Title belts every day because his team are coming to take them on 24th October!

Extra stipulations were added to the Jacket Match after every round. The first round was using regular tag rules, the second turned into a Tornado Tag Match and the third round onwards allowed weapons to be used.

Injuries from during the week cause some last minute changes to the card. Yuji Hino has an ankle injury and cannot wrestle for the time being. He will still be in attendance to see DAMNATION’s final match. Yukio Sakaguchi has a herniated lumbar disc and will not be at the show at all. Naomi Yoshimura takes his place in Masahiro Takanashi’s return match.

Morning Musume member Haruna Iikubo will be accompanying the Humanity team as the character she plays in Record Of Ragnarok.

Astronauts say that the momentum of BASARA and Big Japan cannot be stopped by anything, even by Coronavirus or the Olympics! After failing to win the IRON FIST Tag Titles today, Ryota Nakatsu said he will now focus on regaining the Union MAX Title. That’s not all from Sparky, they want another tag title shot when SAGAT is cleared to wrestle again.

Since the MAX Title match was postponed, Minoru Fujita had to fight Gouma instead. The two ended up fighting outside and Gouma held onto Fujita’s leg long enough for both of them to get counted out. After the match Fujita promised that when he wins the MAX Title, he will first defend it against Masahiro Takanashi. He then told Gouma he will be the second defence afterwards!

On the day of the show, it was announced that Takumi Tsukamoto was no longer considered a close contact to SAGAT and is now free to leave quarantine. However he was still absent from the show because he did not have enough time to travel to the venue.

Oishi Injury Update, Kohei Replaces Shuji, Akai Goes Ahead With DAMNATION Challenge

Makoto Oishi tweeted about his back injury he suffered during yesterday’s match. He is currently under examinations at a hospital in Shiroishi. He said he feels sore but doesn’t have any numbness in his back. Other than that he’s just waiting for updates at this point. DDT themselves haven’t said anything about it yet.

Minoru Fujita wins the Heaven Summit ~Itadaki~ and pockets 500,000 yen in prize money. He joked about feeling sorry for the sponsors financing the tournament because their money ended up going to a freelancer instead of a full time BASARA wrestler. Fujita has ideas on what to use the money for but he can’t say what it is yet. Instead he wants to focus on the next mountain to climb and that is the Union MAX Championship! He challenged Takumi Tsukamoto to a title match on 27th July. Today, Fujita stands on top of BASARA and he told the rest of the roster they still have a lot of training to do.

Astronauts are now double champions in BASARA and Big Japan! For Sento Minzoku, victory was so close for them today. Daiki Shimomura capitalized on a blown double team spot from Astronauts and hit Fuminori Abe with an Asai DDT. However Abe blocked the Swanton Bomb with his knees and put Shimomura in the Manjigatame. Takuya Nomura held Isami Kodaka back until Shimomura finally gave up. Abe said he wants Astronauts to be the tag team that best represents the pro wrestling world. Their success is also making them stronger individually and Nomura has a chance to become a triple champion later this month when he challenges for the BJW Strong World Title.

The Jacket tag match ended up in chaos when all four wrestlers involved all fought in the ring together. Gouma tried to keep things under control but kept getting caught in crossfire after crossfire. He eventually gave up and called off the match much to everyone’s anger. They convinced him to restart the match but chaos broke out a second time and he cancelled the match again. Gouma declared himself the winner and the other wrestlers attacked him in retaliation.

The UWF Rules being used is a 20 minute time limit that can end by Knockout, Submission, Referee Stoppage or a 5 Point TKO. Points are lost by knock downs and rope breaks. Wrestlers cannot be attacked during the knockdown count. Headbutts, elbow strikes, closed fist punches to the face and hitting below the belt are all prohibited. Wrestlers will be given two warnings for breaking those rules and will be disqualified if it’s done a third time.

This is Yuka Sakazaki’s final match in Japan before her excursion to AEW next month.

Moka Miyamoto and Arisu Endo are both fighting for their first singles victory.

The reveal may turn out to be something other than a return to TJPW or even pro wrestling so we just have to wait and see.
