Brookes Update, Takagi Has Dry Eye, Akai Teaming With Chihiro, Sumi Challenges MIKAMI

An update on Chris Brookes and his injured shoulder was put out by DDT today. Doctors found some damage to his shoulder but not enough to get in the way of his wrestling activities. As a precaution DDT are keeping him off their shows for two weeks. Brookes is expected to wrestle again at the 14th October show in Hokkaido.

The rare times they’ve been in the ring together were as opponents. Second is Akai facing the rest of Eruption. This time she will be fighting not with Yukio Sakaguchi & Hideki Okatani but against them!

Recent communication between Kazuma Sumi and MIKAMI had resulted in MIKAMI planning to show up in DDT again. Sumi wants to learn from DDT’s original high flyer and inherit his skills. If we are getting the full MIKAMI experience then that means a ladder will be brought into play.

There is a change to this weekend with Chris Brookes. He is getting his right shoulder examined for injury this week and is unable to wrestle on either shows. DDT will update everyone on when Brookes can return as soon as they get his results. HARASHIMA will take his place in the main event for the KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Titles. The earlier match HARASHIMA was booked for will now have Akito in it instead.

The contracts for the two title matches were signed earlier today. Yumehito Imanari spoke of the pride he felt seeing Shinichiro Tominaga try to beat Isami Kodaka for the Spirit Of Ganbare Title. Tominaga failed but his efforts inspired Imanari to be the next challenger to step in front in Kodaka. Even though Kodaka originally planned for this title reign to be like an invasion he has felt the warmth, fun and brightness of Ganbare☆Pro over time. So when he beat Tominaga it brought him back to reality when he noticed the fans were disappointed with the result. He wants to remain champion in order to keep getting guaranteed bookings from GanPro. His previous memories of Imanari are only from back when Imanari was on the DDT video team. He is confident he will beat him because he cannot envision what kind of pro wrestler Imanari can be.

Hentai Punch Drunkers said they want to win back the Spirit Of Ganbare Tag Team Titles because they never got to hold onto the physical belts while they were champions. Hikaru Sato said that means you cannot say he and Tyson Maeguchi ever “lost the belts”. It is a loose end that needs to be tied up. In fact, Maeguchi is acting like this is his first ever championship match and believes the title he is fighting for has a lot of history behind it (no and no). Takuya Wada complained that GanPro was too leniant over the decision to book this rematch because Maeguchi hasn’t done anything recently to deserve another chance. Shuichiro Katsumura wants to win in order to prevent the first champion team from ever establishing a connection with the physical title belts. Wada and Maeguchi then almost got into a fight during the group photo and had to be kept apart.

I’m betting that Brookes’ shoulder injury is not bad enough to take him out of “ULTIMATE PARTY 2023” where he is advertised to defend the KO-D Openweight Title against Yuki Ueno. I’m daring fate here.

Despite losing his big match over the weekend, MAO was still encouraged to go his own direction and make a decision that will be best for himself. That quickly sent him down the road to challenging Matt Cardona for the DDT Universal Title. Of course Steph De Lander will be there too by the champion’s side. Maki Itoh had the right idea to try and incapacitate her in order to beat Cardona. Give MAO that battleplan and he will come up with an even crazier way to get that done.

So yeah, Chris Jericho is going to be on the show fighting Konosuke Takeshita. I didn’t expect that. The AEW feud surrounding Don Callis is going to have a chapter over in DDT where Takeshita is establishing himself back into a face for the home fans. I’m among the critics of Jericho who accuse him of constantly positioning himself into AEW angles that take the spotlight away from people who are getting over. But I’ll give it to him here, it’s paying off with a big match for DDT in Sumo Hall.

Takeshi Masada has begun a campaign to get himself into this year’s D-Ou Grand Prix. He asked DDT to put him in a few singles matches to prove he is worthy of taking part in the tournament. First up is KANON, a wrestler who had a poor time in last year’s D-Ou GP. That was KANON’s first time in the tournament and he only scored 2 points.

Yuki Kamifuku & YuuRI defeated Suzume & Yoshiko Hasegawa the first time round, will they do it again? It is also a second chance for YuuRI to impress Kamifuku, who she looks up to so much.

Masada’s next singles match on his road to the D-Ou GP is against last year’s finalist, Yukio Naya. That’s quite a big leap for Masada to fight one of the weakest performers from last year and then one of the strongest.

The All Asia Tag Team Titles are now safe from the dirty hands of Atsushi Onita thanks to BURNING. The new champions are Jun Akiyama & Kotaro Suzuki. If you ask Akiyama that means the belts are now under DDT’s control instead of All Japan. But not if Yoshitatsu has anything to say about it. He is getting a chance to win back the titles and he chose Takao Omori to be his tag partner this time instead on Onita. Since Akiyama wants to defend the title in serious matches instead of death matches, the bout will be contested under PWF rules, which is pretty much the same as standard rules but with a 10 count outside the ring and the title can change hands on a DQ.

The big surprise is Max will be defending the NWA World Women’s Television Title too, making it a double championship match! The bout will have a 30 minute time limit. The NWA Women’s TV Title normally has a 6:05 time limit because as the name suggests, it was made with a TV show format in mind. God damn it I’m going to have to watch NWA Power again if either Tatsumi wins or Max brings the IP Title over there.

Onita felt he and Yoshitatsu needed to accept the challenge of Akiyama & Kotaro Suzuki in order to increase the championship’s value. Monomoth’s tag partner is Kappa Kozo from the UMA Corps which of course means Miyako Haru will be there to keep an eye on things.

Saki Akai is on the show but there is still no announcement yet as to what she will be doing there.

There was only one person Chris Brookes had in mind for his next challenger. He wants to defend the KO-D Openweight Title against Akai before her retirement in November. The two of them had a double title singles match involving the DDT Extreme Title and Iron Man Heavymetalweight Title inside an empty Korakuen Hall back in May 2021 because of the covid pandemic. Akai gets to challenge for the KO-D Title for the first time ever but warns she is not doing this for sentimental reasons. She wants to win and become champion so Brookes better take her seriously!

The aftermath of Yuki Ueno choosing The 37KAMIINA over Konosuke Takeshita has calmed things down a little bit. Takeshita has said at the end of the day he is still friends with everyone in the unit even if they aren’t seeing eye to eye right now. That claim will be taken to the test after MAO challenged him to a singles match. Is this MAO testing himself against Takeshita when they are at their strongest or will there be some frustations being taken out on each other?

DDT’s inter-promotional rivalry with All Japan continues with Atsuki Aoyagi & Dan Tamura coming on over to fight The 37KAMIINA. Aoyagi is excited to fight Ueno for the first time and sees MAO as a future opponent too. However when Toy Kojima heard that he got worked up at being overlooked as always. He is just as much an important member of The 37KAMIINA as the others but nobody ever names him as an opponent they want to fight. In Aoyagi’s defence, he admits he doesn’t know who Kojima is. But then he repeated he only wants to fight Ueno and MAO so whatever Kojima does to him in response is kind of deserved.

He already has a team put together with Takanashi & Mei Suruga, mixing CDK and ChocoPro together. Eruption want to defend their championships as much as they can before Akai’s retirement and do not mind who their opponents are. The announcement of this match on DDT’s website only mentions the KO-D 6-Man Tag Titles so it looks like the AJPW TV 6-Man Tag Team Titles will not be on the line.

It was already announced that Hiromu Takahashi will be at Sumo Hall but the choice of opponent was going to be all up to him. Kazuki Hirata read out a heartfelt letter written for Takahashi asking him to be his opponent at the show. Hirata didn’t expect Takahashi was actually in the room at the time and certainly didn’t expect to roll him up and try to win the Iron Man Title either. Takahashi decided to make Hirata’s dream come true and they will face each other. So far no championship is on the line. Not the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title held by Takahashi nor the DDT Extreme and Iron Man Titles held by Hirata. Things may change as we get closer to the show but who knows what championships either will be hold by the time we get there.

Toyo Mates have pulled off the upset to qualify for the Princess Tag Team Titles match at “WRESTLE PRINCESS IV”! The big momentum shift in the 3 Way Match was when Yuki Kamifuku hit both members of Daydream with the Famouser together. She then chose to deal with Suzume, leaving it all up to Mahiro Kiryu to finish the job. It almost backfired when Arisu Endo put Kiryu in the Camel Clutch but Kiryu escaped and pinned her with the Spinebuster. That means Toyo Mates moves on to face Free WiFi on 9th October where the winners will become the new champions.

Kamifuku admitted she was feeling burned out after the Summer tour which included her run in the Tokyo Princess Cup. She always has high expectations for Kiryu but was worried she couldn’t pull it off when the match came down to her and Endo. Kiryu swore that when they fight Free WiFi, she will cut off their signal! Daydream were disappointed they didn’t win. Both Rika Tatsumi & Miu Watanabe miss carrying the pink title belts. Tatsumi said she even would have agreed to take part in two title matches at “WRESTLE PRINCESS IV” because she is planning to defend the International Princess Title there too. Suzume was apologetic to Endo for not being able to rescue her in time. Daisy Monkey believe they haven’t reached their full potential as a tag team yet so they still have a way to go until they become the best tag team in the world!

In preparation for the final Reiwa AA Cannon tag match happening later this month, Yuki Arai’s homecoming match was against Yuki Aino. The result was not in Arai’s favour as she was beaten by the more experienced opponent. It is the first time Arai lost a match in Kyoto. She said she had a lot of support from the fans but she was lacking in ability to win. Aino wants a repeat result when she and Moka Miyamoto face Arai & Saki Akai on 18th September.

Nao Kakuta busted her nose during Match #3. It is one of the rare times you will see blood on a Tokyo Joshi Pro show.

There is a regular pre-match routine that Pom Harajuku does with Daisuke Kiso. After Harajuku gets checked in the ring for foreign objects she shouts “Onegaishimasu” for as long as she can while Kiso guides her voice with his hand until he throws it away. Today he threw her voice towards the famous stained glass window of Kyoto KBS Hall causing the lighting behind it to shut off! They repeated the spot to fix the lights back to normal.

Toga was not at the show due to being in poor condition. The tag match she was scheduled to be in was turned into a 3 Way Match with the remaining wrestlers.

The big announcement that DDT has been teasing this week was revealed today. Saki Akai announced she will be retiring from pro wrestling on 12th November at “ULTIMATE PARTY 2023”. She is celebrating her 10th year as a pro wrestler this year and felt the end of it is the right time for her career to finish as a beautiful flower instead of a wilting one. Akai said at the press conference that she’s been with DDT for 10 years non-stop and is proud to have been a part of the company. When she was inexperienced and lacking in skill during her early years, the warm support from everybody gave her strength and confidence. She decided that Sumo Hall was the perfect place for her retirement match because it is also where she debuted in 2013.

Also at the press conference was Sanshiro Takagi. He spoke about scouting Akai a decade ago, thinking she had great potential and then faced a lot of opposition over the idea from her mother. Takagi ensured Akai’s mother that they would take responsibility for her every step of the way and asked her to let Akai do it for at least one year. He is so happy and proud to see how much Akai loves DDT and was willing to do anything she could to help them grow. It is now up to DDT to give her the most beautiful send off they can give her. Takagi also told Akai she will always be part of the DDT family even when she is retired.

Akai then answered questions from the press. She told them her post-retirement plans is to run her beauty salon along with continuing her modelling career. She didn’t start thinking about retiring until her 8th or 9th year in the business and felt her 10th anniversary would be the most ideal finishing point. It was this past February when Akai told Takagi of her intentions to retire. Takagi thought Akai would be with DDT forever and then joked about asking her mother for forgiveness every year until he stopped in year six. Akai has told her mother about the retirement plans and also hopes today’s news will reach her estranged father Hidekazu Akai. She also suggested doing a mixed-gender match of some sort for her last bout because she debuted in that kind of match.

But before all that happens, Akai wants one more chance to win the KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Titles with Eruption because that championship is the one she has the most affection for. Takagi listened and decided right there that Harimao Vs Eruption will take place at “WRESTLE PETER PAN 2023” on 23rd July with the belts on the line. Takagi was asked to describe what Akai’s appeal as a wrestler was. He said Akai is tall, beautiful and hates to lose. He thinks she probably inherited the last one from her father. He also said she has an amazing fighting instinct and wants her to keep showing it until the end. Akai said she is thankful she never suffered any serious injuries during her career that made her miss any ring time. As a pro wrestler it makes her happy she gets to end her career on her own terms. She still has her anniversary shows coming up and her retirement is 6 months away but she knows it will all go past in a blink of an eye. She thanks her fans because they made her a pro wrestler and took care of her.

The day belonged to Saki Akai but we’ll start off with the D-Ou Grand Prix matches first. The B Block has become a close race between three wrestlers. Kazusada Higuchi is possibly one win away from reaching the final after he beat Chris Brookes. It may have come at a cost of his right hand though because Brookes attacked it with a metal fitting. The damage was enough to prevent Higuchi from using the Brain Claw but he pulled out a big Headbutt to put Brookes down for the three count. Higuchi felt his opponent’s passion in the match and felt he couldn’t lose to him. Brookes accepts he is out of the running but will do his best to beat Yuji Hino in his final block match.

Over in the A Block Daisuke Sasaki used a lot of foul play against Naomi Yoshimura by attacking his legs with chairs and getting MJ Paul to interfere. If that wasn’t enough, Sasaki used the Pedigree late in the match. That was the move Sasaki used to give Yoshimura a cervical sprain back in 2019. Thankfully the move did not end the same way today but Sasaki was able to pin Yoshimura with the Hurricanrana afterwards. The defeat ends any hope Yoshimura has of catching up with the field and he now cannot reach the final. Sasaki however is now neck and neck in first place with a former ally.

Hino finds himself tied with Higuchi in first place of the B Block. MAO tried to throw everything he could at him but couldn’t win. Not even the Alien Plancha and Michinoku Driver II could put the big man away. Hino still praised him for being an interesting wrestler. He said MAO’s Plancha was a higher jump than TAKA Michinoku’s and MAO’s version of the Michinoku Driver was more effective. For those reasons Hino is looking forward to fighting him again.

While Hino and Higuchi are fighting over the top spot, Yukio Naya is catching up with them. His win against KANON brings him only one point behind the leaders and a golden chance to leapfrog over them into the final. KANON ends his tournament run with only one win but still enjoyed being able to do whatever he wanted on his own.

With the Grand Prix out of the way, let’s get to the headline match. The show was Akai’s homecoming in Kyoto and she got to team with Yukio Sakaguchi & HARASHIMA against Aja Kong & The 37KAMIINA. The match was special for Shunma Katsumata too because of his longtime association with Kong going back to when he as a child got to meet and take pictures with her. Kong gave Akai a beating but Akai still fought back, hitting a big dive onto Yuki Ueno & Katsumata. Kong tried to attack Sakaguchi with a steel can but his Katsumata by accident. Sakaguchi then hit Katsumata with the God’s Right Knee, pinning him to win the Iron Man Heavymetalweight Title.

Sakaguchi couldn’t even catch his breath when Akai rolled him up with a School Boy after the match to win the Iron Man Title from him! Before Sakaguchi could complain, Akai said he once told her not to show any openings to be attacked in the ring at any time. She is really happy she got to do a show in Kyoto again and be able to win a championship there too. After she finished her speech to close out the show, Hideki Okatani rolled her over with a School Boy but she kicked out at two, remaining as champion. She later said her goal with the belt is to achieve the most title defences with it.

Naruki Doi made his second DDT appearance today, winning a trios match with Tetsuya Endo & Akito on his team. He was impressed by the opposing team made up of young wrestlers but next he would like to have matches against both Endo and Akito!

Since Kyoto is home to game masters Nintendo, Danshoku Dieno declared he & Yuki Iino were going to become Pheromones Masters today. The result of this was Iino stripping out of his wrestling gear and “evolving” while Pokémon game music played over the speakers. This plan backfired when he ran the ropes in as little clothing as possible and ran into Yukinori Matsui, crotch to face. That was enough to get Iino disqualified.

She’s been teaming with Aino a lot recently and thinks she is now ready to finally win it. Aino backed up Raku’s words and believes together they can beat the strongest and most gorgeous team of Saki Akai & Yuki Arai. Reiwa AA Cannon accepted the challenge and the match will happen at Korkauen Hall on 27th November.
