Tokyo Princess Cup 2021

The 8th edition of the Tokyo Princess Cup is the largest one yet. 23 wrestlers from Tokyo Joshi Pro will take part. It leads to an uneven bracket where some fortunate entrants may have shorter paths to the final than others should they win all their matches. A lottery will be held to determine the complete bracket soon and another lottery will be held at the semi final stage. The full list of entrants are:

The savvy veteran Minoru Fujita reigned supreme in Heaven Summit ~Itadaki~. He has a big idea to spend his prize money on but he cannot say what it is yet. The only hint he gave is the idea will be even more special if he becomes the Union MAX Champion before then. Takumi Tsukamoto is still handling the heavy schedule that comes with being a double champion for two promotions. This title defence in BASARA is happening four days after his BJW Death Match Title defence against Drew Parker in Big Japan.

1. Moka Miyamoto Vs Arisu Endo ended in a Time Limit Draw (15:00).
2. Yuka Sakazaki defeated Suzume with the Magical Merry-Go-Round (9:07).
3. UWF Rules: Miyu Yamashita (1D/2E) defeated Mirai Maiumi (1D/1E) by Knockout with the Skull Kick (11:17).

D = Down
E = Escape/Rope Break

The first “TJPW INSPIRATION” was built around a hardcore match, the second time around was more UWF flavored. Miyu Yamashita and Mirai Maiumi had their go at the combat sport with Yamashita’s karate against Maiumi’s judo. Maiumi used the Lariat for a counter and eventually took the points lead over her opponent. However a rush of kicks from Yamashita turned things around and the Skull Kick resulted in a KO when Maiumi couldn’t answer the 10 count. Yamashita said the UWF Rules are so much fun and she was happy to try them out with Maiumi today.

Yuka Sakazaki defeated Suzume in her last match before trekking off to AEW for a month. Suzume treated this match as vital practice for the Tokyo Princess Cup so even though she lost, she still did her best to learn from it. She wants to have an evolutionary summer while Sakazaki is away in America. Sakazaki was hoping to finally win the Princess Cup this year but she thinks the timing to visit AEW again is fate. Her goal on this excursion is to wrestle on Dynamite and get back at Britt Baker for knocking out her tooth last year.

A chance for Moka Miyamoto and Arisu Endo to get their first singles win ended in a stalemate. After 15 minutes a winner couldn’t be determined. Endo hit the Tsuruga Castle for a nearfall while Miyamoto had Rashomon locked in until the bell rang. Endo is disappointed with the draw but still thinks she had a fun match. Miyamoto didn’t know she was capable to wrestle for 15 minutes. Now that she knows she can do it, she aims last that long win or lose from now on.

The UWF Rules being used is a 20 minute time limit that can end by Knockout, Submission, Referee Stoppage or a 5 Point TKO. Points are lost by knock downs and rope breaks. Wrestlers cannot be attacked during the knockdown count. Headbutts, elbow strikes, closed fist punches to the face and hitting below the belt are all prohibited. Wrestlers will be given two warnings for breaking those rules and will be disqualified if it’s done a third time.

This is Yuka Sakazaki’s final match in Japan before her excursion to AEW next month.

Moka Miyamoto and Arisu Endo are both fighting for their first singles victory.

Minoru Fujita Vs SAGAT in the Heaven Summit ~Itadaki~ final will be held on 7th July. The two had a staredown after the main event and Fujita left without saying anything. SAGAT spoke to the fans about his history with FUMA, Trans-Am ★ Hiroshi, Yusuke Kubo and Daichi Kazato going all the way back to their Union Pro days. Now that he is guaranteed to end the tournament no worse than in second place, the only thing he wants to do is win and be on top! Doing so will be the best way for him to repay Ryota Nakatsu after being invited to join Sparky.

Takato Nakano and Kosuke Sato kept grabbing each other by the hair after their tag match.

Fans were allowed throw paper streamers into the ring for the first time in a year and three months.

This morning Tokyo Joshi Pro announced that Yuka Sakazaki will be returning to AEW for an excursion next month. Sakazaki will wrestle her match with Suzume on 1st July in Japan and afterwards will travel to America for a month long stay. It will be Sakazaki’s first time wrestling in USA since February 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic became global. Due to this absence, Sakazaki will not be entering this year’s Tokyo Princess Cup. Unless there is a change with Japan’s two week self isolation rule over travelling, Sakazaki will not be back in TJPW until after the 7th August show. She is guaranteed to be back wrestling on the 14th August Korakuen Hall show onwards. I figure there might be one or two episodes of “THAT’S J-PW” with her still in it that will air on WRESTLE UNIVERSE while she is gone.

The contract for the Princess Of Princess Title match was signed on Saturday before the Narimasu Act Hall show. Miyu Yamashita expressed disappointment over failing to win the Princess Tag Team Titles with Maki Itoh last week. She’s going to show Sakisama what she can really do at their match. Sakisama isn’t used to being called a challenger. She heard about Yamashita’s dream of becoming a double champion but she couldn’t pull it off. If Yamashita couldn’t make her dream come true then Sakisama promises to make it come true on her behalf.

The two teams for the main event met for a press conference today and it turned into an argument between Yuji Okabayashi and Shunma Katsumtata. They kept shouting “Pissari!” and “NeppoWER!!” back and forth to each other throughout the meeting. HARASHIMA and Konosuke Takeshita are keeping their eyes on the prize. Takeshita said his recent form shows he is returning to the centre of DDT. He doesn’t want his momentum to stop and would like to be KO-D Tag Team Champions with Katsumata. Winning the belts in Osaka too would be a miracle for them. HARASHIMA is aware that it’s been a long time since he was focused on the Tag Titles. He looks forward to fighting against the Ultimate Tag League winners.

The King Of DDT final four have given their thoughts going into the final rounds. Daisuke Sasaki thinks he is now the strongest wrestler after beating both the DDT UNIVERSAL Champion and KO-D Openweight Champion in the first two rounds. However whenever he sees Takeshita he still feels the pain in the rib he broke from their D-Ou Grand Prix match last November. It’s time for revenge. But if he wins and faces Yuji Hino in the final, he will accept his fate and lose to Hino in 5 seconds. He’ll get the prize money anyway. Takeshita argues that Sasaki only beat the champions because he used Low Blows in those matches. He thinks he can beat him if he dodges those kind of attacks. Hino admits the tournament has been hard and he’s been fighting some big names throughout. If Takeshita does beat Sasaki then Hino promises to break his ribs in the final so Sasaki will get his revenge. Kazusada Higuchi is determined to advance past the semi-final for the first time. He won’t think about the final until he gets there.

A team of Olympians in one form or another are going after the KO-D 8-Man Tag Team Titles together. Joining Yoshiaki Yatsu is Akito, Hiroshi Yamato & Keigo Nakamura. All three of them asked to join by pointing to their amateur wrestling experience in the Junior Olympics. Akito finished 2nd in his 2004 class, Yamato finished 3rd in his 2002 class and Nakamura… was eliminated in the first round at the 2016 competition.

The champion himself Jun Akiyama is entering the tournament and gets to nominate his challenger if he wins it. Akiyama has gone on record wanting to choose Sanshiro Takagi as his opponent so two wrestlers in their 50s will be fighting for the championship.

I guess if you’re going to do a major outdoor show at Kawasaki Stadium you have to have Atsushi Onita in an exploding ring death match. The venue will have two rings set up with one of them being used for the explosion match.

TAMURA and Raimu Imai from HEAT-UP will both be on the show. TAMURA is an 18 year veteran while Imai only turned professional last December.

Yoshiaki Yatsu held a public training session today to demonstrate his wrestling ability with his specially made prosthetic foot. Using Keigo Nakamura as his sparring partner, Yatsu successfully did Bulldog Headlocks, Suplexes, Power Slams and even a Uranage. For his big finish, Yatsu applied the Jail Hold with such skill that it made Nakamura submit. Yatsu explained to the reporters that when he stands, he cannot move his ankle so he risks becoming an easy target in the Battle Royal if he stays still. For now, kicking with the prosthetic foot has not been ruled illegal by DDT so Yatsu is looking forward to kicking and stomping his opponents before the rule gets changed. He is so excited to wrestle again.

The contracts have been signed for the three championship matches. The match order was decided by measuring the career achievements of the three current champions. Time for the rubber match!

Now 20 years old, Marika Kobashi is challenging for her first singles title to prove she has grown up. There is some jealousy behind the move because she didn’t like seeing Hikari Noa win the IP Title before she did.
