The second ever Gaisen Sakura show put together by Ryuichi Sekine and his wife Nodoka Tenma brought a day of wrestling to their home of Shinjo Village in Okayama. Matches were provided by both BASARA and Tokyo Joshi Pro with Sekine taking part in a main event Union MAX Title challenge against Shuji Ishikawa. Although he wasn’t able to win the belt in front of his wife and child, Sekine promised everyone he will continue to live in the village determined to never give up.

Tenma’s sister Yuki Aino teamed up with the rest of the Tojo Tokosatsu Club to fight against Aja Kong again. She also had to dodge out of the way from a top rope smashing hammer attack from Mizuki. Mizuki had some more misfortune after that when Kong accidentally hit her over the head with the steel can that was aimed for someone else. The Club were given 10kg of A5 Grade wagyu beef as their reward for winning the match. They knew it was raining in the area yesterday and believe it went away today because Kong is really a super ultra sunshine girl.

It’s looking like Antonio Honda will be the defending Iron Man Heavymetalweight Champion in the Battle Royal. His inclusion in the match has gotten Sumire Uesaka’s attention, enough for her to declare war on him just because his name is Antonio! Honda’s told Tokyo Sports that if Uesaka attacks him, his response will be to target her arm. That way if she gets injured it will just be to her arm and she’ll still be able to do her voice acting job.

According to BASARA it will be the first time a championship pro wrestling match will be held in Shinjo Village. Sekine will be the hometown hero of the day if he can win the belt in front of his friends and family. By the way, Sekine & Nodoka Tenma are expecting their second child in the summer if you haven’t heard already. Tenma revealed that news on her Twitter like a month ago.

There are currently four requests he has given people. Shino Suzuki is tasked with challenging influencers with over 100,000 followers to games of rock paper scissors until she beats three of them. The GM Tetsuya Koda was told to go find a big guest famous enough to sell out Sumo Hall and get them to make their pro wrestling debut. The mascot Minimo-chan was told to master its special moves through intensive training. Finally Sanshiro Takagi was instructed to scout a new idol to turn into a pro wrestler.

The Super Family are hitting some sort of rough patch after failing to win the Iron Fist Tag Team Titles on the last show. Lil’ Kraken wonders if they should split up but SAGAT still wants to team with him. After taking a day to think about it, the decision was made to have the two face each other in a singles bout. Is this just something to get their frustrations out or will it be a (super) family rift that cannot be healed?

Yuki Ishida from DDT makes another appearance here. He’ll take on BASARA’s young prospect Takeru Inoue in the opener.

It’s new territory for the Max Heart Tournament because the current Princess Tag Team Champions have reached the final for the first time. Ober Eats are now just one win away from winning the whole thing and living up to the votes they got for the Best Tag Team category in the recent Tokyo Sports Awards. Meanwhile Mizuki & Uta Takami are on something of a miracle run as a tag team, although they want to prove they deserve to be here through hard work and well earned success instead of luck and good fortune.

There’s an alternate timeline where Daydream and Kyoto Tag could have been a semi final match in the tournament. Instead they’re facing each other on the undercard to help build up March’s Princess Of Princess Title match between Miu Watanabe and Yuki Arai.

Opponents have now become tag partners. Shoko Nakajima liked wrestling Sara Phoenix so much she wants to team with her. They may end up being a bounce back team for Daisy Monkey though.

A first win awaits for either Ren Konatsu or Shion Kanzaki.

4. Isami Kodaka defeated Ryuichi Sekine with a Vertical Drop Brainbuster (11:43).

Wrestling couple Ryuichi Sekine and Nodoka Tenma came up with an idea to hold a show while the sakura is in full bloom to attract people towards their village. The result was the creation of Gaisen Sakura Pro Wrestling. The first attempt at running an event was split into two parts. The first half of the day had BASARA producing matches for the show. Sekine himself wrestled in the main event portion, losing to Isami Kodaka in their first singles match against each other since 2019.

3. Rika Tatsumi & Nao Kakuta defeated Arisu Endo & Mahiro Kiryu when Tatsumi pinned Kiryu with the Missile Hip (12:01).
4. Shoko Nakajima & Yuki Aino defeated Aja Kong & Raku when Aino pinned Raku with the UBV (13:25).

The second half of matches were handled by Tokyo Joshi Pro. Being a TJPW graduate herself, Tenma got involved at ringside for a couple of the bouts both as a willing and unwilling participant. Aja Kong was also the big name guest for the last match of the day. She teamed with Raku but the two of them lost to Shoko Nakajima and Tenma’s younger sister Yuki Aino.

Catching Up On The News I Missed

I’m back from holiday. The week both flew by while also feeling like a ton of news items happened while I was gone. I’ll be spending this weekend writing up last week’s show reports so you’ll be getting them eventually. But first I want to get the upcoming lineups out of the way. Hyper Misao is out of action with a right ankle fracture. It looked like she suffered the injury during her match against Steph De Lander at last week’s “GCW VS TJPW” show. Her return will be decided based on her doctor’s diagnosis and recovery time. The injury means she will miss her Daikaiju Pro match back in America later this month.

Due to the request of Toru Owashi we are getting a ground breaking second defence by the reigning KO-D 10-Man Tag Team Champions! None of the previous champion teams have ever stuck together long enough to take part in a second title defence. SCHADENFREUDE International can now become the most successfuly 10-Man Tag Champs ever if they can beat Owashi’s team of scrappy challengers.

Some controversy happened over the Iron Man Heavymetalweight Title while Sayaka Unagi was on her tour of America. She unexpectedly lost and then won back the title against an unknown wrestler at some point. No video footage of the title changes exist and Unagi does not know the name of the person who beat her. After having discussions with the DDT GM Hisaya Imabayashi it was agreed that “Strange Foreigner” will be recognised as the 1,620th champion and when Unagi won it back she became the 1,621st champion. The incident has motivated Sanshiro Takagi even more to reclaim the title for DDT in order to remove any risk of the championship being lost overseas forever.

Keigo Nakamura returns from injury and is immediately being put in the ring against MAO.

The next match Yukinori Matsui is adding to his show is all about Dick Togo and the wrestlers who look up to him. Daisuke Sasaki, Yasu Urano and Antonio Honda have all been taken under Togo’s wing at some point during their careers.

So the first match on the lineup caught my attention. Thanomsak Toba will be taking on another martial artist called Bushimasa. The match is sponsored by A-Toys Challenge Fight, or ACF for short. I went looking for clips of Bushimasa and found some not so impressive looking fights of his. He has taken part in a match type called Tire Fights where a tyre is placed in the middle of the ring, both fighters stick a foot into the gap and have to box each other while keeping their foot in the tyre. Most of his fights I could find had him lose and convincingly so. I guess he exists to be a human punching bag?

Some of the other guests on the show include Jinsei Shinzaki, Yuji Hino and Shigehiro Irie. Also Trans-Am ★ Hiroshi has been added to the show lineup but does not have a match yet.

I’m starting to think D.O.A coming up with that name for themselves was a bad idea. The phrase “Dead Or Alive” is so common that there are plenty of wrestlers out there who claim they used it first. After the unit dealt with Bodyguard’s complaints they then found out Hikaru Sato is upset with them because he thinks they stole his catchphrase. Sato sent Kazusada Higuchi to tell them they should defend both the name and the KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Titles against them. Sato & Higuchi will be joined by Ryo Kawamura. The previous times Kawamura has appeared in DDT he’s been using different Sylvester Stallone gimmicks (Rocky Kawamura, Rambo Kawamura, Rocky Kawamura II, etc). He might be coming back just as himself this time.

The birthday match for MAO is a special one because he gets to team with TAKA Michinoku for the first time ever! Michinoku has been a big influence for him over the years and has inspired a lot of his moveset.

Over the weekend Shuichiro Katsumura defended both of his championships, including the Spirit Of Ganbare Tag Team Titles he holds with Takuya Wada. With nobody stepping up to challenge him for either title Katsumura suggested he and Wada fight each other while they wait for new opponents to emerge. The title match will happen in Katsumura’s hometown of Yokohama.

1. Kaisei Takechi Debut Match: Kaisei Takechi Vs X

Currently all tickets for this show has sold out so DDT will be adding additional seating to go on sale later this week. That’s how much of a hot ticket Kaisei Takechi’s debut match is. Takechi has a black belt in Judo and has been coached by Yuki Ueno in training. For that reason Takechi would like to team with Ueno for his first match. The 25 year old also wants to face opponents who are in the same age range as him because competition within the young generation is going to liven up the wrestling world. He cannot commit to a full match schedule due to his work with THE RAMPAGE but he would like to wrestle more after his debut. He currently weighs 77kg but feels his body as it is now is only built for dancing. So he is bulking up and aims to weigh in at 85kg for the match. Takechi is also trying to figure out what wrestling move he wants to use as his signature. When he dances he often raises his right fist into the air and shouts “THE RAMPAGE” so he wants to come up with something that will follow that.

The main event for Sumo Hall is a rematch from the Tokyo Princess Cup 2022 Semi Final. Miu Watanabe defeated Miyu Yamashita in what has been their last singles match together until now. Next time will be in the main event of Sumo Hall for the Princess Of Princess Title!

BASARA/TOKYO JOSHI PRO “GAISEN SAKURA PRO WRESTLING”, 14/04/2024
Okayama Shinjo Village Outdoor Ring

A free outdoor pro wrestling show is being put together by Ryuichi Sekine and Nodoka Tenma in a little village found on the northwest side of Okayama. The couple run a farm together in Shinjo Village and want people to get to know the area better. So they have come up with Gaisen Sakura Pro Wrestling an event built around agriculture, food and wrestling. The wrestling portion of the event will be split into two parts. One part will be a men’s wrestling show featuring talent from BASARA. The other part with be a women’s show with TJPW involved. If the event is a success then the plan will be to make it an annual tradition held every April when the cherry blossoms are in bloom.
