Chouten ~Itadaki~ 2023

The 8th annual Chouten ~Itadaki~ tournament is going to be the main focus for BASARA during the summer. This year uses the familiar format of a 16-man single eliminaion bracket. Every match will have a 30 minute time limit except for the final, which has no time limit. A draw of any kind will eliminate both wrestlers from the tournament. An odd bit of scheduling this year is half of the 2nd Round will take place on the same day the 2nd Half of Round 1 is completed. The complete 2nd Round schedule has not been finalized yet for this reason. It will have to be sorted out depending on which wrestlers are available to wrestle on 3rd June and which are available for 17th June. This year’s contestants are:

TOKYO JOSHI PRO “TJPW INSPIRATION”, 01/05/2022

1. HIMAWARI defeated Toga with a Half Crab Hold (7:03).
2. Suzume & Arisu Endo defeated Moka Miyamoto & Kaya Toribami when Suzume pinned Toribami with the Ring A Bell (13:11).
3. Gabai Ji-chan defeated Mahiro Kiryu with an Inside Cradle (9:11).
4. Fluorescent Lighttube Death Match: Sawyer Wreck defeated Hikari Noa with the Choke Slam onto Lighttubes (11:01).

Thanks to the existence of the “TJPW INSPIRATION” shows, Hikari Noa gets to live her dream of doing deathmatches. She did one already once before but her second go raised the level by a lot because it contained lighttubes! It is an environment that her opponent Sawyer Wreck is more used to and it showed with her throwing Noa into the lighttubes attached to the ropes. Noa’s back got cut up from being slammed but she got to smash a few lighttubes over Wreck in return. Wreck won in the end by Choke Slamming Noa onto a bundle. Noa admitted the pain turned out to be more than she imagined but she still had fun because she got to do what she loved in front of everyone she cares about. She wants to another death match and next time she wants it to involve barbed wire!

Mahiro Kiryu found herself in an awkward position because her opponent was Gabai Ji-chan. Every time she attacked her opponent she got booed by the fans because she was beating up the elderly. It didn’t help that Ji-chan stepped into the gap between the entrance ramp and wrestling ring during his entrance, needing more help to get in. Everyone also discovered that Ji-chan’s slow movements come from his walking stick. When Kiryu held onto it, her body suddenly changed to that of a senior citizen. The same happened to Daisuke Kiso which resulted in him giving the slowest count when Kiryu pinned Ji-chan. It was long enough for Ji-chan to kick out and when he caught Kiryu in an Inside Cradle, Kiso gave a fast three count. Backstage Ji-chan approached Kiryu and suggested they go fight for a championship together. She didn’t understand what he meant so she went home instead.

Daisy Monkey were victorious against Moka Miyamoto & Kaya Toribami in a tag team match. Toribami put Suzume in the Bird Cage submission but it was countered into a Modified Neck Lock that Miyamoto had to break it up. Arisu Endo took out Miyamoto with the Waterwheel Drop and Suzume ended up pinning Toribami with the Ring A Bell.

A rookie showcase between HIMAWARI and Toga opened up the show. Toga tried to work her opponent’s leg but it was HIMAWARI who locked on a Half Crab Hold to make her submit.

The opening speech took place with Sayuri Namba joined by Shino Suzuki. The two of them ran down each of the matches then Namba tried to get Suzuki to sing for everyone because there was no Up Up Girls performance booked.

During their interview, Noa revealed that her death match against Sawyer Wreck is going to be a Fluorescent Lighttube Death Match! Mizuki also said she would like to face Mercedes Moné someday. I don’t think that comment is leading to anything anytime soon but hey, might as well mention it.

MAO believes he has spoken no lies in his war of words with Endo. He gets frustrated whenever he sees Endo carrying the DDT Universal Title because he thinks he is more worthy of being the champion. Endo can see some of the points MAO has made over the last few weeks but does not understand why MAO thinks he is a better fit to be Universal Champion. He thinks the only way MAO can prove his point is if he beats him for the title.

Shunma Katsumata has already received a lot of toys from DDT fans to use in the TLC Match, including a box of Beyblades from the GM Hisaya Imabayashi.

The arrival of Rayne Leverkusen in DDT has Saki Akai feeling a little confused over what her opponent’s goal is. She understands her situation of trying to make your own path while being related to a famous celebrity but other than that she does not know what legacy Leverkusen will leave behind in DDT once she goes home. Leverkusen’s response is she is very passionate about pro wrestling and quit her job to do this tour of Japan and make a name for herself. Her wrestling career isn’t even two years old yet but she already holds three different championships. She brought up that if Akai beats her then she will have to defend one of those titles against her in a rematch.

The first two matches on the main card have been changed a little bit because of Keigo Nakamura’s injury. Yuya Koroku is moving down a match to take Nakamura’s place in the opener. Koroku’s original spot is now being taken by Diego! He is already in Japan and was invited to a recent DDT show by Katsumata. It will be his first match for DDT in almost six years!

During a press conference Chiitan used a baseball bat to destroy an 18-liter can to show its intention to beat Chris Brookes. Suddenly Brookes entered the room and attacked the mascot along with Akito. Brookes put Akito through a table with a Piledriver but Chiitan fought him off with the Shining Wizard and Tornado DDT. Akito was able to get back up and keep the two apart.

The annual Osaka show put together by Yukinori Matsui will this time be headlined with Yuki Ueno Vs HUB. The story that ties these two together is the WR finishing move used by Ueno. It originally belonged to HUB back when he wrestled under the Super Dolphin gimmick (not Super Delphin but Delphin’s kayfabe brother). Also on the show is Magnitude Kishiwada’s 30th Anniversary match.

Also appearing on the show are Dick Togo, Shigehiro Irie, Kuishinbo Kamen, Kikutaro, No Name (Hibiscus Mii’s spooky nurse gimmick), Tsubasa, Black Buffalo, Yasu Urano and Kohei Kinoshita.

Earlier this week Keigo Nakamura showed symptoms of a concussion but after examination is cleared to return to the ring after a week’s rest. As a precaution DDT has pulled him from all of their shows until 29th April. Rukiya replaces him on this Saturday’s Fukuoka show.

So far Yuki Iino has passed every test to prove he is “Not Sexy” enough to deserve a KO-D Openweight Title match. His latest test took place at the contract signing two days ago. At first he showed up wearing a Louis Vuitton suit worth about 2 million yen. Makoto Oishi’s Sexy Counter device started alerting him that something sexy was going on. Oishi scanned Iino and discovered he was wearing inappropriate underwear beneath his suit. However Yuji Hino pointed out this wasn’t a a wrestling match so Iino is not breaking any rules. Both the champion and challenger signed the contract for their match. However there are four DDT shows still to take place before 3rd May. Iino needs to remain “Not Sexy” in the ring until then otherwise the title match will be cancelled. Oishi promised to follow Pheromones for every one of those shows to continue judging Iino.

Shunma Katsumata came up with the TLC Match to make Jun Akiyama feel pain he has never felt before in his over 30 years in wrestling. He is encouraging his fans to mail in toys for him to use in the TLC Match. In response to this Akiyama asked if he will be allowed to use Toy Kojima as a weapon because Kojima has the word “Toy” written on his tights. Katsumata hates that idea because he cares so much for Kojima. He tried to call him on the phone to prove it but got no answer. Akiyama then called Kojima on his own phone and he didn’t have to wait long for Kojima to pick up his phone. Akiyama simply ordered Kojima to be at the show on 3rd May.

Unfortunately Nick Wayne’s trip to Japan for DDT has been called off due to delays in his visa being issued. He is unable to get it sorted in time to wrestle on the show. Vent Vert Jack from the MY WAY promotion will be Wayne’s replacement. Jack has a bit of recent history with Yuni from wrestling each other on DDT. Oddly enough their match in January 2022 happened outside of the DDTeeeen!! brand.

Before Nakamura got injured, he was used as Chiitan’s training partner for the mascot’s debut. Chiitan learned to do the Shining Wizard during its training. I can assure you that’s not the reason why Nakamura got injured!

The Dance Vs Kickboxing MMA between Kazuki Hirata and Hikaru Machida bout now has a round girl assigned to the bout. Sayuri Namba, the ring announcer for Tokyo Joshi Pro was chosen to be the round girl based on her having previous experience in the role for RIZIN. She promised to practice walking around to get herself ready because the fight is scheduled to last 15 rounds.

Kenta Kobashi will be on the show as a special guest commentator for the main event.

However Shinya Aoki & Yuki Ueno don’t agree and both want to continue defending the belts. Harimao have stepped up to be their next challengers. They want to win any of the KO-D championships because to them KO-D means “King Of Dosukoi”.

Things are getting serious for Banana Senga. After defending the Union MAX Title against SAGAT he told the fans he has a big responsibility as a Double Crown champion (he is also one of the TTT Indie Unified 6-Man Tag Team Champions). He thinks the MAX Title is a heavyweight championship so he is trying to gain weight and be over 100kg. Takumi Tsukamoto entered the ring and said he was so excited watching the main event he wants to use his MAX Title shot right now. Instead the two agreed to have their title match on 13th May because that is when both men are available for the same BASARA show. Backstage Senga also admitted by being champion he makes more money so he wants to save up for a hair transplant! He mentioned he can get it done in Turkey where it is one third of the price as in Japan.

The first time Aijin Tag were IRON FIST Tag Champions their reign only lasted for one defence. They can rest a little easy now that their second reign has already surpassed that. Takato Nakano feels motivated he & Masato Kamino can reach 10 title defences when all is said and done. They beat the Tochigi team of Lil’ Kraken & Leo Isaka. The challengers expected the result but they still think they did a good job teaming together for the first time. Isaka would like to stick around in BASARA and team with Kraken more.

The match between Isami Kodaka and Gouma Ryu had a special rule attached. Whoever would say “I’m sorry” first would lose. It led to Kodaka and Ryu demanding each other wrestler to apologize while they were putting each other in different holds. Ryu ended up getting tired and tried to make Kodaka apologize for putting him in this situation. Kodaka instead said it was ok and asked him to continue wrestling. Ryu understood and apologized, losing the match in the process.

After the opening match, Gouma Ryu approached Ryota Nakatsu and handed him money to be in his corner for his match against Kodaka. Nakatsu accepted and briefly interfered in the later match.

The Japanese indies are being taken over by Speed Of Sounds. Last month Tsutomu Oosugi won his first singles title by becoming the TTT Indie Unified Openweight Champion. It inspired his tag team partner Banana Senga to challenge Isami Kodaka for the Union MAX Title. Today in an upset Senga pinned Kodaka to win that championship! Kodaka asked for a rematch only to be told by Takumi Tsukamoto that the loser of the match shouldn’t be doing that. SAGAT then came out and reminded Tsukamoto he beat him earlier in the show so Tsukamoto can’t ask for a title shot either. Senga decided that Kodaka and Tsukamoto should fight each other for the No. 1 Contendership but in the meantime he needs another challenger. SAGAT stepped forward and said they can have a title match together on 18th April.

Please inform the nation of Canada that SAGAT is now their champion. He won the obscure CCW Canadian Heavyweight Title from Tsukamoto and now has a chance to become a Double Crown champion in BASARA. Tsukamoto has the contact details for CCW and according to him they are relatively easy to get in touch with. SAGAT will need their permission to authorize title defences but the good news is they are usually quick to respond to those requests.

Lil’ Kraken & Leo Isaka challenged Aijin Tag to a IRON FIST Tag Titles match on 18th April. Kraken told them he’s always wanted to join a unit in BASARA but he has no chance of fitting in with any of the current ones. So he decided to team with Isaka instead because they are both from Tochigi.

The challengers for the KO-D Tag Team Titles showed their confidence in very different ways during a press conference today. HARASHIMA pointed out that he & Keigo Nakamura have a 100% win rate as a team. Nakamura showed his determination by threatening to eat a live cockroach he brought along in a jar! Shunma Katsumata stopped him from going ahead with it.

A press conference was held in Shinjuku today for some of the matches on the show. Yuki Ueno said he feels honored that an international superstar has come to Japan wanting to fight him. Samuray Del Sol said the one place he has not conquered is Japan. He first learned of DDT by seeing footage of El Generico wrestling Kota Ibushi there. He’s been watching and studying Ueno’s matches so is excited to be wrestling the best.

Konosuke Takeshita reminded everyone that he’s been with DDT for over ten years and the only person he hasn’t wrestled one on one is his boss Sanshiro Takagi. They have no choice but to finally do this match now. He has gratitude for Takagi and sees this as a match between a parent and their child. Takagi’s been a great father figure but the time has come to surpass him. Takagi said he wants to be in the best shape he can for the match. Some injuries have gotten in his way but he isn’t letting that be any excuse. He won’t let Takeshita move past him so easily and will do his best to crush him! Takeshita also said his experience in AEW has given him a hunger he couldn’t get in Japan because spots on their shows are so limited.

The “Super Powerhouse Tag Team” made themselves known while Super Sasadango Machine & Antonio Honda were being interviewed. The two men thought they were going to get Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima until they worked out that TenKoji’s schedule wouldn’t make it possible. Instead they are getting The Wasteland War Party! Both Sasadango & Honda were terrified by the appearance of Max The Impaler & Heidi Howitzer. The War Party left them laying on the floor with Headbutts. When Honda regained consciousness he began to cry. He thought he was getting a dream match but instead it’s going to be a nightmare!

Away from the press conference in a separate interview, Saki Akai talked about her upcoming match against Masahiro Takanashi. They had one previous singles match together in the 1st Round of the King Of DDT 2018. Takanashi won that match but for the rematch Akai warns there is a part of her that he does not know about. If she can tap into it tomorrow she can find a way to beat him. Then when that match is done Akai wants to focus on Eruption winning the KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Titles in order to push Hideki Okatani up to the next level. She has other plans to celebrate her 10 year anniversary later in the year. Yukio Sakaguchi taught her how to fight in the ring so she would like to face him in a match. She hopes Yoshiko will come back from her break some day for another match. Danshoku Dieno is another past opponent she wants to do a big match with again. She also suggested Takumi Iroha, Rina Yamashita and Sumire Natsu as potential future opponents for her in a DDT ring.

We have come out of “GRAND PRINCESS ’23” with brand new champions holding all of the titles in Tokyo Joshi Pro. We also have some wrestlers refreshing their looks while the new generation of debuts have landed and taken their first steps. Where we go from here is towards Los Angeles.

It wouldn’t be right if The Wasteland War Party went home without getting a chance to say goodbye to Pom Harajuku. I’m sure she appreciates it.

Shino Suzuki is having her first ever singles match. Suzume is her opponent.

Some of the new champions making their first defences on the USA show. 121000000 Vs The Magical Sugar Rabbits in the main event now has the Princess Tag Team Titles on the line. Yuka Sakazaki wants to show everyone how much MagiRabi has powered up from fighting each other. Mizuki has the least experience wrestling overseas of the four but now she is the Princess Of Princess Champion she is not scared of any challenge. She’s also excited by the possibility of becoming the only person in TJPW to hold two Princess Titles at the same time. Miyu Yamashita believes the timing is right for 121000000 to beat MagiRabi on TJPW’s first USA show. Maki Itoh wants her American simps to know they are getting to see her TJPW form instead of the usual version they see from her previous appearances in the country.

Billie Starkz claims she was going to challenge the International Princess Champion no matter who it was coming out “GRAND PRINCESS ’23”. That it happens to be her already scheduled opponent Rika Tatsumi made it a lot easier for her to get the title shot. With the match happening in America, Starkz will get to fight for the championship in front of her friends and family. The new champion Tatsumi has already begun changing her look to be more America-like (or “AmeRika”) in order to truly act like an international champion. She went to this press conference wearing sunglasses and drinking a cola. She isn’t worried about fighting Starkz in her home country because it is still happening on a TJPW show. That means Tatsumi still has the home field advantage.

According to Atsushi Onita he paid 400,000 yen to trademark the Current Blast Death Match. Rather than trying to buy it off him, Sanshiro Takagi would rather take it by force. He still wants DDT to take ownership of the trademark and is joining forces with Joey Janela to do it. Janela has made it his number one goal during his latest tour of Japan to destroy his hero Onita in an exploding death match. Takagi also picked Takeshi Masada to be their tag partner, thinking this kind of dangerous atmosphere is just what the super rookie has been missing. Onita has his DDO allies Shunma Katsumata & Toi Kojima backing him up. If their winning ways continue then Onita has promised to create a new Current Blast 6-Man Tag Team Championhip as something new for them to fight for!

It’s about time Akki wrestled on one of them. Maybe Chris Brookes & Drew Parker will do the camera work and commentary for his match.
